• I created a series of categories under a parent category.

I deleted the parent category, and now all of the sub-categories have gone too. Not sure if that is normal, but here is my issue:

When I try to recreate a category that was previously a sub-category, it tells me that is already exists.

Anyone have any advice on what to do next?

// I was going to remove the sub-categories from the DB, but I am unsure what table they are in.

    Thank you!

  • I’m having this same problem and have been doing searches this afternoon for a solution. In addition to the “already exists” message that sbernado is getting, if you look at my dashboard it says that I have “3” categories, but if you go over to the Categories page there is only “uncategorized” listed. (I’m just setting this blog up and only had one parent with a couple of children to start with that I deleted while doing some reconfiguring.) – Lori

I was expecting more help on this. I guess we’re alone Lori ??

Anyone know where in the database I can remove categories?

    Thank you – Scott

    Hi Lori!

I think I found a solution, though it is not that pretty.

If you navigate to your Manage >> Categories page, click on one of your existing categories to edit it.

Take note of the URL – you will notice the end of the string ends in an ID: wp-admin/categories.php?action=edit&cat_ID=11 – in this case its ’11’.

I noticed that if I manually entered in numbers of earlier posted categories (and now “deleted”), that the category would reappear in the edit page and allow me to Save it again (by clicking the edit category button).

    Hope this helps.

There is still a bug in WordPress however, but at least I am able to get my categories back ??

Scott – where did you “manually enter in numbers of earlier posted categories?”

I would love to be able to use this workaround as I have the same problem … i.e. deleted parent category – blew everything up ??

    Thanks,
    Karri

Got it fixed. See this thread:

    Worked great.
