2.7 New admin interface
-
Ok, where did you guys hide the “view site” button?
This is quite unconfortable to use. Also the “Howdy *username*” line looks…out of place. What about adding a top 100%width div for that?
Anyone agree with me ?

The menu icons don’t actually help as visual shortcuts. I need to read the text to interpret them.
I made a plugin just for that. ??
Tangofy — A plugin for WordPress 2.7
https://op111.net/p65See if it helps you for now.
I like the new interface. Knowing the geeks that created it, the whole durn thing will be customizable shortly. ?? Ye gods, for free yet! Hugs all around (even thems that don’t like it).
Yeah, point doog. As much as I feel 2.7 is all good theory, but practically poor, i’m still keeping the faith. Gotta love WP, hugging it out.
I think I can adjust to all of the changes except for one. The Post Editor automatically loads in HTML, and when I switch to visual (in which I do the majority of my composing), my text turns white. I can see it if I highlight it, but that’s it. Plus, then I can’t switch back to HTML mode without saving the post first. Clicking on HTML simply does nothing.
I disabled some plugins that I thought might be the culprit, but that hasn’t fixed it. I am seriously lost as to what to do about this.
FYI, thanks to the comments on another topic, I did deactivate most of my plugins to the point where I had fixed the problem. Then I reactivated them one at a time, just like it was suggested, and found that RB Internal Links was the culprit. Definitely try this and see if it works for you!
The new Vertical Menu, makes it so much harder for me to navigate.
Web 101 you should never have a vertical menu bar ever epspecially for a backend…
Why?
Because I constanly have to scroll down to click on things. Yes everything is closed nothing is expanded i just happen to have a lot of things. Please bring back the old menu
my eyes move faster LEFT TO RIGHT than Up and Down…
To all the speedy reading vertical haters ?? I’d recommend the Admin Drop Down Menu plugin. To all the vertical-lovin’-icon-dislikers, I’d recommend the Hide Admin Icons plugin.
I have to agree with porrfish1, this interface is a mess!
I installed the lighter menu plugin in the hope to get some functionallity back to the interface. Even though this plugin was not listed in the incompatable plugins list for 2.7 it destroyed 2.7 by completely removeing the admin panel!!!
Now I can’t even access the plugins page to disable that lighter menu plugin.
This would be my wish:
WordPress reverts back to the previous versin but incorporates ‘lighter menu’ plugin. That would be a huge improvement on this horrid and clunky interface of 2.7.
Solution!
Get rid of the nasty new admin panel altogether and replace it with the ‘Admin Drop Down Menu’ that mendezki linked to above. This is the 2.7 alternative to ‘lighter menu’ which was excelent on earlier versions of WordPress.
Yeah, I’ve used the Admin Drop Down Menu (and its predecessors) on every installation I’ve created.
Drop down menus are intuitive, space-saving, and familiar to everyone because they’ve been around as long as GUI operating systems have been around.
Personally, I think that would be the way to go.
But — everyone likes something different, and every new admin interface WP introduces (I’m getting dizzy trying to keep track of them) manages to p*ss off a new group of people.
The ability to customize the working area is a real step forward. Go all the way, and give us the ability to easily customize things like the menus. Or offer it as an official plugin.
It’s a pain for those of us installing WP for clients — the whole point is that it’s supposed to be easy to use. But every time the interfaces are switched, it causes panic and frustration for people who have already gotten used to how to do routine tasks.
That said, I do think WP is moving towards some ideal. It’s been improving a lot in many ways over the versions, but the “reinvent the wheel every other month” is very frustrating to end users.
A nice balanced summary StrangeAttractor.
I think you guys are crazy. 2.7 has the best WordPress interface yet. It’s simply awesome, in all respects. There’s a few missing minor bits, but they are minor. It’s light years better than the 2.5 design was.
As for those of you frustrated with the mere fact that change happens, well, yes, I see your point, but my advice would be to just relax a bit. Because the 2.7 interface is going to be around a long while.
The redesign was done for a specific reason: The 2.5 interface *sucked* in many critical ways, and loads of people hated it. Way more than are chiming in about 2.7. I recall several 200+ post threads here about the problems with it.
Otto42, have you tried the plugin ‘Ozh Admin Drop Down Menu’ or the earlier ‘lighter admin drop menus’?
These are both far superior to the 2.7 admin interface. What’s more, they don’t disappear at the drop of a hat!
I suspect you’ll see loads more complaining about 2.7 as more and more people get around to upgrading.
I’m with Otto, I like the 2.7 admin interface. I tried the Ozh Admin plugin – not sure why, but it buswrecked* my site, which is the short route to permanent plugin limbo for me. (* as in scrambled my options table, lucky I had a backup). Maybe the next step is themes for the admin panel? Then users could get their OWN appearance ‘inside’ as well as ‘out’ – I’d vote for that!

Yes. Mad props to Ozh, but I don’t care for that menu style. It’s difficult to use, to me. Side menus are superior, IMO.

I don’t know what this means. 2.7 menus don’t disappear at all. You expand them or you don’t.

2.7 has already reached over 100k downloads, and had many, many people testing the release candidates. The majority view is that people like the changes. There will always be complaints, but this go-around there are far less of them than when the 2.5 interface debuted.
