• I can’t figure out what happened when I “upgraded” to 2.7.1, but it appears that my CSS file was overwritten. I had modified the Default (blue rectangle top) for months to get it exactly right and now it looks like it’s completely overwritten and none of my changes are here.

Is there any way to correct this?

    Huge thumbs down, WordPress.

  • Always keep a backup of your theme (and database) on your home computer. I don’t know if Google or the Internet Archive would keep a cached copy of your stylesheet, but you could check. Another option is to see if your web host has a backup.

I tried this trick and I must not be looking in the right places. How would you use this to retrieve a CSS file?

WordPress Backups describes using FTP to backup your files so just use FTP to reupload the files.

If you don’t have a backup, ask your host if they have a backup of your files.

Also, you might consider copying the wp-content/themes/default folder to wp-content/themes/mytheme and then use that for your modified theme.

Why did this upgrade overwrite CSS files?

The auto upgrade might have had an updated version of the default theme style.css or it was just a mistake.

The backups, they are your friend…

The wp-content/themes/default/style.css is part of the software package and gets overwritten each time you go from one version to the next.

If you copy the default directory to something like wp-content/themes/doseofdigital/ and modify that copy of style.css description and name, this will not happen to you again.
