• I am trying to install the automatic upgrade to 2.8.5 (from 2.8.4) and keep getting a “Installation Failed” with this comment:

Could not copy the file: /public-html/wp-content/upgrade/wordpress-2.8.5/wordpress/wp-comments-post.php

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Lindsey

  • I did try a manual upgrade. Unfortunately, there are no RZW files in the wordpress 2.8.5. My attempts to automatically upgrade have been left with Downloading wordpress 2.8.5 zip; unpacking
Friday night, the same page was there all night.
    What is going on?

Unfortunately, there are no RZW files in the wordpress 2.8.5.

I don’t understand the significance. What you need are the .php files mostly, and some .js and .css. And those are essentially just text files. You get those by unpacking either the .zip or the .tar.gz. I’m not sure what the problem is here.

How about uploading? Have you uploaded those files to the server?

I am also having the same error only as follows:
    Downloading update from https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-2.8.5.zip.

    Unpacking the update.

    Verifying the unpacked files

    Installing the latest version

    Could not copy file: /htdocs/blog/wp-content/plugins/akismet/akismet.gif

    Installation Failed

This is the third post I’ve read with essentially the same error only a different file that is unable to be copied.

I did try to deactivate all plugins and re-install.

That looks like a file permissions problem. Change the permissions on those file before trying to upload the new ones. Or just delete the old ones first, which in the case of core files is what you should be doing anyway. It could also be a file ownership problem, which might take your web host’s tech support to fix.

    Hi!

I read all the posts and tried every suggested hint. Nothing worked. Then I just backuped the whole WordPress installation to a local drive, deleted WordPress installation on server and copied backup back to server. Automatic upgrade then worked like a charm on first try :). Take care about any directories/files that may need special rights re-established.

I hope I will not have similar upgrade problems later on when new upgrade becomes available. I know this is not a real solution, more like time saver workaround.
