• When I try to upload a photo to the site I get this: Unable to create directory /var/www/vhosts/alsave.org/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads/2009/12. Is its parent directory writable by the server? What exactly should the permission settings be for this and security? I’ve adjusted them with no good results yet. Also turned the plugins off without any effect. Suggestions would be appreciated.

  • If your host uses “safe-mode” (like mine) you will never be able to let WP create the month for the uploads archive, so change your setting in the Dashboard.
Else my wp-content is 0755 and my dir uploads is 0777.

Thanks! Sorry to be so clueless, but what settings do I change in the dashboard? I made sure my permissions were like yours and have sent a query to my host.

    Nothing wrong with a question!
In Dasboard/Settings/Miscellaneous in the line “Store uploads in this folder” set it to ” wp-content/uploads ” (without the “”) and uncheck “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders ”

I’m having the same problem, exact same message as you vtolbert, my ISP runs safe mode and told me to install a script called PHPFCGI which I did, now I get the error message ‘http error’ instead. I checked the permissions are OK, I also noticed that there are no year or month folders created in the uploads folder despite having tried some image uploads.

Bizarrely I have another wordpress install on the server which is running fine without these problems.

Thanks so much for the info, henkholland. I had written my most excellent host: https://www.hostasaurus.com, and they made some adjustments for me so that it works fine now. For some reason the uploads are going into the 12/09 folder rather than the 1/10, but they are getting uploaded and displaying fine.

Hope you get your problems resolved turpin!

    Thanks again to both.

Uh, don’t know whether to mark this topic resolved or not since Turpin still has some questions.

Good for you vtolbert and I think yes, mark it as resolved.Turpin can mail his host like you did or follow my advice.
