• Hi,

Quite enjoying this plugin and its interface, looks promising. But mystified by the ludicrous amount of space (leading) between my 2nd level link items, which are just text links.

As there’s no way to alter ‘margin’ in the megamenu interface, I dug around in the megamenu.scss file – thought I’d found the relevant line, put a fixed margin in, saved and refreshed browser…no change. Indeed, lots of changes in the megamenu.scss file have no affect whatsoever on the appearance of my megamenu! To the extent that eventually I renamed the file to xyz.scss….and still there was no change to the megamenu appearance!!! Hmmm….

So which css file actually holds the information which controls what a viewer sees in their browser? Because as far as I can tell, it sure ain’t megamenu.scss!

    Yours bamboozled!

    Hi hj,

The megamenu.scss file gets compiled into CSS (based on the settings you’ve used in the theme editor), and that CSS is saved to your uploads folder under maxmegamenu/style.css. That style.css file is the one that is output on your site and used to style the menu(s).

But, you should not edit either file directly – the megamenu.scss file will get updated every time the the plugin updates, and the style.css will get regenerated each time you save a menu theme.

Instead, you should simply write some custom CSS that does what you need it to and paste it into the Mega Menu > Menu Themes > Custom Styling section.

Could you post a link to your site, and provide a screenshot of what you’re trying to do? I will provide instructions.

    Regards,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for quick reply. OK, understand the ‘methodology’ now…no wonder I couldn’t find it!

Instead, you should simply write some custom CSS that does what you need it to and paste it into the Mega Menu > Menu Themes > Custom Styling section.

That would be ok if I could write CSS! I can change a few parameters when I find them, but I don’t know CSS well enough to write it.

Could you post a link to your site, and provide a screenshot of what you’re trying to do? I will provide instructions.

The site’s on a localhost development, so no. I could send screenshots, but doesn’t seem any way to do that here?…

    cheers

    Hi Hugh,

I’d need to see the site in my own browser to work out the exact CSS.

This is what you need to do:

Find the CSS you want to change in the style.css file
Copy that whole block of CSS (including the selector)
Paste it into Mega Menu > Menu Themes > Custom Styling
Remove the styling rules that you don’t want to change, change the one you do want to change.
    Save.

    Tom

    Hi Tom,

Sorry couldn’t take your message earlier, called out.

OK, I’ll try that and see. In case you can help me identify the relevant part of the CSS….imagine a full width megamenu panel of 4 columns, but only one column populated (so far) with 2nd level links (4 of them). On my iMac screen res. 1920×1200, the vertical gap or space between each link is about 17mm. The font size of the links is 14px bold.

It just looks wrong! But oddly enough, if I have columns headed with a 2nd level link followed by a number of 3rd level links below, it looks absolutely bob-on, splendid!

Sorry I can’t send you a screen shot, but obviously no way to share the localhost.

    cheers
    Hugh

    Hi Hj,

Please try reducing the Mega Menu > Menu Themes > Mega Menus > Item Padding option.

That’s a bit of a guess, as your theme may be applying it’s own CSS to that element. If you still need help please post a link to your site once it’s online, it’ll be a quick fix once I can see it in my own browser (but very difficult to work out otherwise).

    Hi Tom,

    Thanks for the weekend reply!

I tried that and, yes, it made a substantial difference! Thanks. I guess I was looking at padding for 2nd level items… and in case didn’t really know what ‘items’ were!

It’s a bit of trial and error trying to work out which parameters effect which part of the panel, or items in the panel. I’d like to add a little bit more space at the bottom of the panel, below the last link in a column, for example. I can’t use item padding, obviously. But adding panel padding (bottom) doesn’t seem to make any difference at all. ??

It’s like being new to theatre lighting and wondering which switch turns various lights on ??

I’ll certainly transfer the site to live when I get the chance, but at the moment all my hosting databases are tied up.

    cheers

    Hi Hugh,

“Panel Padding” applies to the whole sub menu. Setting the bottom padding to, for example 100px, should give you a huge gap at the bottom of the menu.

Please let me know once the site is online and I will take a look.

    Regards,
    Tom
