3.3.1 issue Product page: Featured image turns from Square to Rectangle

    This issue happens to product page.

    I have rectangle pictures set as featured images for my products.
    In all previous versions of Woocommerce, featured images were 400×400 squares (automatically cropped). They looked great!

    However, today I just installed 3.3.1 and the featured images in any product pages have all turned to rectangles.
    Can you please advise how to fix?
    I need them back to be square.

    Hi, have a look in the customizer under WooCommerce section for the display settings. Ensure you have the cropping set to 1:1. If there are no settings then it means your theme is declaring its own custom image sizes which cannot be overriden via a WooCommerce settings.

    It’s currently 1:1. But the images are still rectangles.

    I see the following lines in the customizer:

    Main image width
    Image size used for the main image on single product pages. These images will remain uncropped.

    Does this mean the featured image will NOT be cropped ???

    For thumbnails, you set 1:1 cropping in Appearance > Customizer > WooCommerce > Product Images.

    For single product pages, the image is always displayed as uploaded, uncropped.

    Not true, this depended on the old “hard crop” setting.

    If you only ever want the image to be a square, why not upload a square image? ??

    Otherwise, the theme can customize the single image size and crop settings with some custom code now.

    I really need squares, but don’t want to make & upload square images for every of my products.

    Thanks for your hint about “some custom code“.
    Can you provide more details, a sample code or a link to learn that?

    Sorry about the delay here. You can use a plugin like Simple Image Sizes to specify that the images should be hard cropped as squares if you wish: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/simple-image-sizes/
