301 Redirects

[ Moderator note: moved to How-to and Troubleshooting. ]
I used web design software to created web pages then uploaded them directly to the root directory.
Since I installed wordpress into this same directory because I want that to be the software for my site and where I create new pages.
What I want to do is redirect the old pages to new pages in the wordpress but when I create a .htaccess with 301 redirect in the root, it breaks the .htaccess in the wordpress and gives a 404 error and when I change it back the error becomes a 500.
I can fix the 500 by rebuilding the .htaccess in wordpress. Also I do use the wordpress as my home landing page already if that has any bearing on the issue. I deleted the index in the root to do that.
Any help would be appreciated.
