3.0.1 upgrade cannot update my database

I had a “successful” upgrade of 3.0.1 itself, but then it asked me to upgrade my database. Then, after clicking on “upgrade wordpress database”, I was sent to an essentially blank page save for a WordPress logo at the top. I left that there overnight, and it has been like that for over 6 hours. I tried to go back to an admin page again, and it just keeps asking me to upgrade my database. Cilcking on the button results in the same thing.

FWIW, I get sent to a page with the URL https://<blog>/wp-admin/upgrade.php?step=1&backto=%2Fwp-admin%2Findex.php%3Fpage%3Dstats

This is a blank, inactive page.
