3.5 debacle

I want to know if WP do any research into how much of an impact the upgrade is likely to have on websites regardless of how good the 3.5 code is

Yes research is done. Some of the core developers keep a local copy of the entire www.ads-software.com plugin directory on their local machines just for testing and searching for possible issues before making major changes.

Here’s my point… WP make these changes to the the core, they know all the top plugin authors and website frameworks are doing the right thing and therefore, no probs, but also they know very well that history shows that there are plenty of themes and plugins out there that don’t adhere to the guidelines exactly and due to this specific change have a good chance in breaking the website… I’ve always though WP is backwards compatible and I assume that means my plugins etc. If fundamental changes are made to the core that WP knows darn well will break a website with the history of previous plugins… give us some slack and make it clear the update may have a good chance to break our websites… even if it is our fault.

I’m sure some updates in the core wouldn’t make much difference to many plugins, but I also think some of the core changes would be very likely to break many plugins…

These topics tend to go round and round but I’ll try to make my point: this release of WordPress has been vetted, tested, beaten, late-night’ed and tested.

Did I mention it’s tested? ??

Give https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/ a look and you can get some insight into that process. It’s not possible to build a QA test for everyone of the thousands of themes and thousands of plugins but a really good attempt has been made and active plugin/theme developers do get involved and know the score for keeping up to date.

Even with that keeping up to date things happen and many plugin authors have been releasing updates. That’s a good thing and that’s the way for plugin authors to respond.

That’s a common misconception regarding the upgrades. It’s never about who’s fault something is, it’s about preparedness.

If you have a good file and database backup not on your web server then you can turn your installation into a smoking ruin and would still be able to get it all back to the way it was.

That’s what I mean by preparedness, being ready to deal with any problems upgrade related or not.

That said, you should do the upgrade and sort out any issues. Normally they’re quick to get a handle on but you have to be willing to accept advice from other volunteers and work out those issues yourself.

If you’re someone who’s got a problem with the upgrade then it really is OMGWTFBBQ?! But from the overall view of the topics and posts the upgrade problems really have been manageable and it’s not an upgrade apocalypse. ??

I get what you’re saying but… if you’re not WP or a plugin or theme guy… it sort of is an apocalypse ??

I’ve done all the recommended fixes but to no avail, i can’t afford to lose my google ranking so i’ve paid someone $50 to roll it back. I just have a gut feeling this update isn’t going to be as smooth as it seems.

Really? You weren’t around for the 2.8 update when a huge number of plugins (that weren’t beta tested) went belly up? Or the 2.5 update? This one, whilst not one of the quietest – has been pretty uneventful.
