• When I upload images to the Media Library, they get 500 errors. A thumbnail image of the picture that got the error on upload appears in the media library, and I can attach the image to a page. However, my slider plugin can only display an older image that didn’t get the 500 error. Some days some of the thumbnail images disappear from the media library and or a leave blank space on the page where the image was uploaded, without my having done anything, and reappear hours or days later. Once I even saw the WordPress dashboard sidebar icons appear where the thumbnail image belongs!

I’ve spent days combing the support forums, and I’ve tried just about everything suggested, including:
    – trying another browser
    – deactivating my only plugin
    – activating the default theme “twenty-twelve”
    – clearing browser cache and cookies
    – refreshing
    – re-installing 3.5.1
    – adding define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false ); to the bottom of wp-config.php file (just before the require_once line),
    – added define(‘SCRIPT_DEBUG’, true); just before “That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging”
    – I checked for ghosts of deleted plugins, and found that there were none.

None of the above helped at all.

I didn’t bother manually reinstalling WordPress, since the automatic install had never had a hitch, I had no reason to suspect it was incomplete. I felt that if I’d try it manually, I was far more likely to have an incomplete installation than if I didn’t try this.

Many support threads blame hosts for media library problems. I may have to switch hosts. If that is your conclusion, please let me know what a host is supposed to be doing to prevent this problem, so that I can interview potential hosts.

I’m thinking of switching hosts, but how can I know if anyone else is able to prevent this problem? In searching for a better host, I did a lot of research in the support forums and found that there are unresolved threads about the 3.5.1 Media Library on other hosts, amongst them Hostgator and even WordPress’s officially recommended Bluehost. Dreamhost has experienced this issue as well, but at least they realize it’s a problem and are trying to solve it.

OK, can you get another volunteer WordPress moderator to look at this? Someone who cares that such a basic feature like Media Upload should work reliably.

Maybe one of the developers working on the next release of WordPress? I think it’s an interface issue between WordPress 3.5.1 and the average shared hosting environment.

Sure – I’d have to agree with esmi – the errors are a hosting problem and she has TONS of experience with WP. I’d suggest taking her advice.

Citing other threads is not very useful – unless they have the same errors and are on the same server, using exactly the same theme and plugins that you are…

I think it’s an interface issue between WordPress 3.5.1 and the average shared hosting environment.

I work on and manage dozens of WordPress 3.5.1 sites on shared servers. There’s not been a single issue of this type on any of them. This is specific to your site and, right now, a server security configuration issue is the best investigation route based on the available evidence.

I’m talking about posts that tried deactivating all plugins and trying the default theme, who all reported very similar errors. I downloaded eight threads on the subject, many of whom were “rudely interrupted” by others who said “Yes, I have the same problem.” This is only the tip of the iceberg.

Eight threads? These forums get a new post every 10 seconds. Between myself and WPYogi, we’ve helped out in around 84,150 different support threads of all types. If this was a WordPress core issue, don’t you think we might have noticed it?

This is specific to your site.

    84,150

    Oh my!!

Yes, really, ChKatzman – I know this kind of thing is very frustrating, but if it were an inherent WP issue, there would be thousands of posts here.

The only way to sort this out is to take the advice offered…there is no quick fix or standard solution that works for every situation.

You write “This is specific to your site and, right now, a server security configuration issue is the best investigation route based on the available evidence”. I don’t understand what you mean by “a server security configuration issue”. Are you saying that the problem is not with all of Fatcow’s hosting, but only with the particular physical server my site happens to be on?

    Yes!!!

Is it conceivable that a single host could have different security settings in each server?

If it helps any, a couple of months ago, my hosts (who I’ve used for nearly 10 years) tweaked a setting on one of their servers. It was only a small change but it totally stopped one of my plugins in its tracks. Contacted the hosts, had a quick chat with them, they tried out some server changes, I did some testing and between us, we got it sorted inside 3 hours.

Having multiple sites with 1 host does not mean that all sites are on the same server. And server configs can differ across any host.

I have two subdirectories with multisite. Could they be on different servers?

    (@chkatzman)

Why would they make different security settings for different servers? What does that give them?

A more secure server? Servers are not necessarily identical machines…but you’ll need to ask your hosting company about any server questions – they are not a WP issue.
