• I tried to do the upgrade to 3.5.2 and I got to the page which says:

    Database Update Required
WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.
The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.

I click update but it does not return. Going back to the wp-admin page, wanting to de-activate plugins and reset the theme to try the upgrade again, forwards to wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F

I should have avoided this update as the last update took me down as well ??

Should I try re-uploading all files & folders (except the wp-content folder) from a fresh download of WordPress?

    Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

I’m having the same problem so I tried esmi’s solution.

I either get a blank screen after clicking on “continue,” or if I rename my theme file and remove “-old” I’m back in the same loop. Either way I can’t get back to the dashboard to do anything.

@oscher3874 just wondering if you got passed this yet?

I finally had my service provider restore my blog to its original configuration and I performed a successful update from that point.

    All is good now!

    Thanks

@oscher3874 Thanks for letting me know. I get the same error when trying to access the BackUpWordPress backups ?? I need to follow the steps outlined by @esmi.

@esmi I did a reinstall as you outlined. I made the mistake of deleting all files except the wp-content directory, this mean I no longer had a config file. I manage to get this back form a 6 months old backup I had.

I can now login as an administrator with 3.6 installed. However my site is not fully working – the theme is not visible under the themes menu even though is is there (_old removed from end) in the file manager. Any thoughts on why it is not showing up?

    Thanks, Tom.

Where did you download this theme from? Does the Twenty Thirteen theme work?

    (@boardtc)

Thanks for getting back! I downloaded 3.6 from https://www.ads-software.com/download/

The theme indexes seem messed up.

When I tried to activate twenty-eleven just now it said suffusion was activated. (I Don’t have a twenty-13 in my wp-content as you said not to overwrite that, so it is the old one.)

Then my theme showed in the available list. When I try to activate is it says suffusion activated. Sigh ??

Is it just my theme directory in wp-content I should have kept and overwrite/delete everything else?

double checked your comment on the previous mail and you also said to up “re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder” (your bold). But I am wondering should I retry it uploading all except my theme directory rather than the wp_content folder?

    (@boardtc)

@esmi I didn’t redo the wp_content folder. I deleted twenty-eleven and installed twenty thirteen. The same thing happens, whether I pick my theme (mountain dawn), twenty thirteen it says that suffusion is installed. Any thoughts?

FTP into your site (or whatever file management application your host provides) & rename the wp-content/themes/suffusion folder to wp-content/themes/suffusion-old.

That’s done the trick, thanks! Most of my pages are 404ing though ?? Even though they are showing as pages in admin….

Try re-saving your custom permalink structure.

    (@boardtc)

I’m not sure how to do that but I did go into one page, permalink was listed fine (they all are), I did and update and then view page and it 404s.
