• Hi

I’ve just tried upgrading WordPress 3.8 onto 2 blogs. Both times, when I try to expand or collapse a menu on a post or a page (in the back-end as ‘admin’), it just doesn’t respond. They seem to work intermittently i.e. they’ve worked once or twice, but then stop working for no apparent reason. 99% of the times I’ve tried, they just don’t respond at all though.

I’ve just tried it on a fresh install on a brand new domain – so no plugins, and using the default theme. I get the same thing – so that’s three blogs on two different domains that are replicating this fault.

This is what happened with the fresh install: I open the ‘hello world’ post and type a few test paragraphs. I then click on the collapsible menus to the right (publish, format, categories etc). They work, great! I press ‘update’. Now they don’t respond at all. Can’t collapse any menu. Can’t expand any menu.

    Is this a bug?

    Hoping you can help

  • What Operating System/Version and Browser/Version are you using? Have you tried from another?

And has the browsers cache been cleared?

Tried latest browser versions of Chrome, Firefox, and I.E. via Windows 7. All cleared caches. Also asked my web host’s support to try (in case it was my computer) and they got the same thing. ??

Did your host send you any server error logs?

Did they suggest to deactivate all plugins?

Did they force a default theme to rule out a theme issue?

Did they then do a Manual Update of site?

    Hi again

Q: Did your host send you any server error logs?

A: They told me that they couldn’t see any errors in the logs that would relate to this problem

    Q. Did they suggest to deactivate all plugins? Did they force a default theme to rule out a theme issue?

    A. This last test blog is a fresh install – so it’s just working out of the box, no extra plugins or themes added.

    Q. Did they then do a Manual Update of site?

    A. Well it’s happened to all 3 blogs on my server. 2 on one domain. And the most recent (a test blog with fresh install, no plugins installed, default theme used, using default ‘hello world’ post and ‘sample page’ page).

    Thoughts?

Seems odd indeed. I’ve not seen anyone else with this issue. What is the URL of this site?

It’s concerning as I want to upgrade but the fact that the collapsible menus stop working, mean I can’t use it. Here’s the site blog (fresh install, no plugins or themes installed):

It almost sounds like JavaScript gets disabled once you update. Are you able to take a screenshot of before you press the update and one after?

    (@silverymoon)

Sure I can take a screenshot. Do you mean a screenshot of the source code before and after? Or of the actual interface itself?

    both if possible. ??

    Hi again

OK so here’s a quick screencast of me clicking the collapsible menus prior to updating the post page, and then ‘trying’ to click them after updating (nothing happens).

    https://screencast.com/t/cVnR3uOhB5v

Also, the WYSIWGY editor goes blank. And clicking ‘text’ or ‘visual’ seems to make no difference. Having said that, the post does seem to have saved as the added text now shows on the live post on the blog’s homepage.

I was going to show you the code via screencast but realized it’s best if I just saved the ‘view source’ of the backend post page. Here it is:

I thought that the issue *may* be to do with Google’s mod_pagespeed but this current test (i.e. screencast and source file) was done with mod_pagespeed turned *off*. So I’m stumped. ??

My apologies – I had forgotten to clear my cache prior to doing this last test. You can see from the file (linked to in last post) that the Pagespeed module’s effects were still cached at that point.

I have redone the test (Google’s mod_pagespeed switched off and my browser’s cache cleared this time) and the problem doesn’t occur. So the issue is with Google’s mod_pagespeed module. It doesn’t seem to jive well with WordPress 3.8’s collapsible menus after saving. I just want to add here though, that it works fine with earlier versions of WordPress. Just not 3.8.

Is there a way to report this somehow to the WordPress developers?

So the issue is with Google’s mod_pagespeed module.

There are known & documented issues with aggressive configurations of mod_pagespeed & WordPress.

Is there a way to report this somehow to the WordPress developers?

WordPress is free software and this free, volunteer-staffed forum is the only resource available via www.ads-software.com.

    Hi Esmi

Thank you. What would you recommend I do to rectify this problem?

    Turn mod_pagespeed off.

    (@silverymoon)

Thanks Esmi. I realize that this would be the easiest solution but I’m wondering if there’s a way I can resolve this and keep pagespeed on. Do the volunteer developers have somewhere where users can submit issues that the developers may consider fixing?
