Hit upgrade too early. before reading essential guide. I know I am a clumsy idiot.

    Now cannot get into admin.

how can I get back to old setup/ old version of wp so at least can keep site running.

done both the plugins folder and the theme folder I use twentyten renamed and the website https://www.winchmorehillquakers.org.uk just disappears, url produces a blank page

Any more twentyten folders that haven’t been renamed?

no there are no phantom twentyten or plugins folders now

Good. Now try re-uploading all files & folders – except the root wp-config.php & .htaccess files and the the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Also re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Fourteen folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

twentyfourteen won’t work with my site design is this just an interim measure?

is this just download wordpress 3.8 and then transfer those files using ftp to the site?

I can’t get through to my hosting service re the backup of the content…

If you need assistance with your FTP login details, you will need to contact your hosts. That’s not something we can help with here.

no I can log into FTP, I am just wanting to check that the content is backed up as I thought before leaping into this. so I may not be able to resolve now.

it sounds to me like deleting most of the files except the content is like deleting the site and reuploading which makes me nervous…

None of the files or folders that you uploading have anything to do with your site’s content – as long as you stay clear of the wp-content folder itself.

Got a competent friend to help This worked. Excellent advice.

The problem seems to lie with a faulty upgrade, plus very old plugins or those no longer supported.

    Many thanks
