Working on a friends site: I understand that modifications to themes should be done through child themes and I’ve done that before on 3.7x and 3.8. Worked great. Ftp in make the directory in themes, upload style.css, etc., etc. Go to themes, activate child theme… everything is hunky dory.

Now since this new 3.8.1 version when I did EXACTLY the same thing. uploaded, went to themes, … NO CHILD THEME.

Forced a browser refresh. NO CHILD THEME.

Is it me or did they make it so you have to ZIP a dang folder and upload it via WP only?

    Anyone have a work around?

  • Hello. Are you still having issues with your child theme? I found the following information helpful. Hopefully it helps you too…

    Good luck and happy WPing!

NOPE. Thanks for the link but that DID NOT WORK. It used to but with the new updates WP doesn’t recognize the folder in the file structure.

    Anyone else?

Have you tried the Child Theme Configurator yet? It’s compatible to 3.8.1.

I’ll try plugin but sort of irks me that I have to have another plugin. Especially when it worked just fine before and now with 3.8.1 it won’t work. lol

Thanks I’ll try this plug in and let you now.

The plug in works ok but I still wonder why the original way to create a child theme doesn’t work now. Think it might be a bug in 3.8.1?

I have exactly the same problem as sylviaivie.

I’ve installed many child themes before, but as of 3.8.1 below installed themes it states (translated from my language) something like: “Following themes are installed, but not completely. Themes must include styles file and a template.” Remember, the original english error is probably a bit different.

My child theme includes these files:
    functions.php
    screenshot.png
    style.css

Something must have happened at 3.8.1…
    Anyone?

@tom762: If you require assistance then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.

FYI, child themes are working just fine for me in 3.8.1.

@esmi I am perfectly fine with tom762 adding to my post.

you are also missing the point. WE learned to put a child in by the following method.

    1. Create a child theme folder via ftp in wp-content/themes
    2. Make a style.css that loads the parent theme’s style.css
    3. Make a blank functions.php file

Upload via FTP to the child theme’s folder.

In 3.8 that process worked fine. Unlike Tom, I did not get an error message the child theme simply refused to show up in WP 3.8.1 Theme area.

I had double checked the file names, titles, locations of the olders, etc. Refreshed, forced refresh of the cache… nothing. It just wasn’t there to choose.

The only way I got it to work was the plug in. Even then when I went to update some things under “Customize” WP told me that I was logged out and needed to log in and presented me with a login page, with the side menu still sitting there. However logging in did nothing. Finally out of frustration I went ahead and made the changes and they took.

    Weird….

That’s very nice of you but that is not how these forums work.

Unless you are using the same version of WordPress on the same physical server hosted by the same hosts with the same plugins, theme & configurations as the original poster, do not post in someone else’s thread. Start your own topic.

WE learned to put a child in by the following method.

And that still works fine for me in 3.8.1. I currently have about a dozen child themes on my local server and every single one runs just fine. Ditto the child theme I used on a clients re-launched live site the other week and the child theme I am using on one of my own 3.8.1 live sites.

This is a theme/user specific issue – which is why we need people to please post their own topics when asked.

@emsi LOL yep, you would think it still works. But I’m here to raise my hand in honesty to tell you it did not work.

The only way that appeared to be available to me was to zip up the child folder (I suck beans at zipping folders) and upload via the themes area. OR to use the plug in.

It may work for you, but for me… it was a blank.

I am not doubting your current problem – merely pointing out that this is site-specific. Hence, anyone joining in saying essentially “Me too!” is just going to stop you getting the right solution for your problem.

You can download a pre-made Twenty Thirteen child theme from here. Try installing that and let us know if it works.

    Hi,

I found this topic because I have the same error like Tom. The message:

    Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description
Adamos Child The parent theme is missing. Please install the “Adamos” parent theme.

I already have done plenty of child themes and some work fine on WordPress 3.8.

The topic seems to be “Resolved” but I don’t see a solution here…

    Hi again,

Just to add something: the child theme I want to use in WordPress 3.8.1 works perfectly in WordPress 3.8 in exactly the same configuration on the same server.

    Thanks for your help

PS @esmi: I continue this topic because it seems we all have the same problem…

    @bastien:

I ended up using the child theme plug in and that worked ok.

Interestingly, I’m editing another theme. Did the created the child folder then upload the style sheets, etc. and that worked this time.
