• Wordpress updated my three sites to 4.7.2 without my say-so and it’s a nightmare. Plug-Ins don’t work, I can’t install Media, links no longer open in a new window. I do not know what to do. I am not a coder, I am a writer, and this occurrence confounds me. Anyone that can offer help will have my undying devotion and a FFL. Thank you.

WordPress updated my three sites to 4.7.2 without my say-so and it’s a nightmare.

    Review this codex:
    Configuring automatic background updates: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Configuring_Automatic_Background_Updates

Plug-Ins don’t work, I can’t install Media, links no longer open in a new window. I do not know what to do.

    Have you tried:
    – Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches. Not just your browser, but any op cache or content network cache as well such as Cloudflare. If your host provider has a “Purge Varnish” option or if you can ask your provider to flush memcache on your server.
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
manually resetting the plugins folder by FTP/ SFTP (no Dashboard access required). Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder (if you have created such folder). The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins). If you don’t have access to your admin area, use FTP/ SFTP , or your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides (no Dashboard access required). Navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder by adding “-old” to the end of the folder name. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme (Twenty Sixteen.). That will force your site to use it.
MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Please read the Manual Update directions first.

I am having the same issues with nearly ALL of my client websites. Sorry to say it, but this latest update is a shambles.

    @fharrington86,

If the troubleshooting already posted made no difference for you, then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic. That way you stand a good chance of getting the assistance you want.

I’m not looking for assistance. I’m concurring with the OP as to how bad this update is.

I’m looking forward to the next update that will hopefully rectify it.

Dear forum, I am the original poster here. Now I cannot write in posts. I am NOT a coder and DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CODE. WordPress is supposed to be user friendly, eh? Or so I thought. I do not know what to do. Anyone able to help? Note that I am NOT REPEAT NOT a coder. I am just a blogger. Thank you.

What I have tried: Deactivating Plug-Ins. Clearing cache in my browser. Downloading a clear-cache plug-in. I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CODE so telling me to code will not help.

    Thank you for your help.

Did you see my comment that I am a blogger, not a coder? I do not know how to code. I do not understand any of your instructions. How do I fix the problems caused by this update without coding? What I have tried: Deactivating plug-ins, clearing cache of my browser, installing a clear-cache plug-in which I have no idea if it works or what it does. Thank you.

Have you attempted all the troubleshooting steps suggested above?

Good day to you, t-p. As my OP indicates, I am a NON-CODER, and I do not understand “all the trouble-shooting steps suggested above”. That is my point. I have no clue what you mean by most of your ideas. That is why I was careful to advise that I am a NOT A CODER. Thank you.

If you can’t do the work yourself, you have the option of engaging a professional to assist you. If you want to follow that option and hire someone for this, then please try one of these sites: https://jobs.wordpress.net/ or https://directory.codepoet.com/
(FYI, it’s not a good idea to respond to work offers from random forum users who have read about your issues.)
