    Jetpack Mechanic ??

If you choose a Tiled Gallery type, Jetpack automatically calculates the number of columns based on your theme’s content width, and on the number and size of your images.
For example, if you were to upload more portrait images, you’d get more columns than if you were to use landscape pictures.

You can’t consequently change the number of columns, unless you use the “Thumbnail Grid” gallery type. Then, the column option will appear again.

I read that information already about theme width & image sizes when I was making the gallery full width.

What it did was instead of using the original image size before changing the width it now uses a larger size image so still keeps the 3 column layout.

If the images were still displayed at the original size before I changed the width there would be enough room for a 4th column which I was under the impression it would generate not change the size of images displayed.

Is there a way to limit then size of thumbnails in effect to force it to generate 4 columns?

and even with an all portrait gallery I still get 3 columns

You can control the size of the thumbnails by switching to the “Thumbnail Grid” gallery type. You will then be able to control the number of columns to be used, as well as the size of the images in the gallery thanks to the “size” shortcode parameter.

When using any of the other gallery types, these settings will be ignored.

not using or interested in a thumbnail grid.the question relates to the mosaic thumbnails generated.
so nowhere to edit it to:
1)force the mosaic to form 4 columns
2)force or limit mosaic thumbnails to smaller images so they fill the available space

That’s correct. As I mentioned earlier, if you choose a Tiled Gallery type Jetpack automatically calculates the number of columns and size of the images based on your theme’s content width, and on the number and size of your images. It consequently won’t offer you any options to change the number of columns or the size of the images.

If that doesn’t work well on your site, could you post your site URL here, so I can have a look?

yep not interested in using the thumbnail gallery at all it looks dated and positively antique and doesn’t fit in well with the site front page

Using the “square tiles” option presents me with a 5 column layout of smaller images.
This isn’t ideal given all my photos are in 16:9 ratio portrait and landscape hence needing to use mosaic which preserves aspect ratio.

automatically calculates the number of columns and size of the images based on your theme’s content width,

Adjusting content width merely increases individual image sizes in the mosaic gallery. There should be an option or way to edit the code so limits the size of the images generated.
For a full width page template having a thin column of images down the centre of the post instead of filling all the horizontal space available defeats the purpose of full page

That’s a good idea. I took note of it here, and we’ll consider your feedback for a future Jetpack update.

That’s something you can fix by adjusting the $content_width value within your theme for that template. You can look at how the default “Twenty…” themes do it for a good example.

    No
you can’t fix it by adjusting content width (which I already did before even making this thread) because it generates larger images in a 3 column mosaic gallery.Hence asking if there’s a way to edit something somewhere so it will generate a gallery of same size images as default setting but spread out the available width.
If the gallery were to utilise the available space in the content width to generate a mosaic that took up the entire space while utilising the same size images as per default then it would tile appropriately to 4,5 columns however much space there is in the same way as if you decrease your browser window you will be left with 2 columns or 1.

I see what you mean. I believe the number columns would increase if the $content_width value were significantly bigger, but in my tests it didn’t change either. As you pointed out, it generates larger images.
I’ve added this as a comment to the ticket I opened.

    Thanks!

I can’t remember the exact numbers but it was significantly bigger.for arguments sake & example:

default content width is 600px* generating 3 columns of 200px wide images
I changed my content width to 960px hoping it would generate 4 columns of the same 200px wide images
It generated 3 columns of 300px wide images

yes I also accounted for white space around images in my calculations the above is a rough example.

point is it was significantly larger increase in content width and Im feeling the image sizes are generated as a % of the content width rather than a fixed pixel width.
If this % could be edited somewhere it would allow a more horizontal gallery to be generated to fully utilise full width themes whereas it’s currently a more vertical alignment which suits thinner themes and the use of sidebars

Hi, I’m using Jetpack Carousel and I’d like to know where I can find the Carousel settings page and also where to find a description of the shortcodes I can use with [gallery].

    Thanks
