A couple of days ago, I attempted to load the login page, got the 401 error, using FireFox and container tabs. Used MS Edge, no issue, got the login page and was able to log in.

Today, got the login page, but when I attempted to sign in, received the 401 error page in both browsers.

    Unauthorized

This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn’t understand how to supply the credentials required.

Additionally, a 401 Unauthorized error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

This is only happening for A Spiritual Paradigm site, not my Office Wife site.

Hosting says should not be a problem, yet when I get the 401 my IP is blocked. It happens when I load the log in page.

Saw a post with a reply to look at .htaccess. Can someone tell me what is suppose to be in this file? Mine is scary. LOL

.htaccess content varies wildly from site to site, so what’s appropriate for you is unlikely to be the same as anyone else’s. There is a standard WP section, but it has nothing to do with authentication. You could try temporarily renaming .htaccess so it has no effect on login attempts. Your pretty permalinks will no longer work, but if .htaccess was the cause you should now be able to login at least. Then you can restore the file’s proper name.

Some browser extensions can interfere with authentication attempts. Try using incognito or safe mode which typically do not utilize any extensions.

It could be one of your plugins is behaving poorly, in particular a security oriented plugin. You can temporarily rename the /plugins/ folder to deactivate all plugins. You should then be able to login if a plugin was the cause of trouble. Then restore the proper folder name. You’ll then need to manually reactivate all of your plugins.

To narrow down the responsible plugin, activate each plugin one at a time. Log out then try logging in after each. When the same error recurs, the last plugin activated would be the cause.

Thank you, just find it an odd coincidence that I should get blocked and then get this error.

So far working. Will go back through the plugins again as well.

I appreciate the feedback and assistance.

    Have a great day
