I have around a dozen websites using the WP SMTP plugin with the same mailgun credentials. Same mailgun domain, same mailgun API key.

Just one of them will not authenticate. I get a 401 unauthorized error when attempting to send a test email.

When I got this error today, just for fun, I opened up another of my websites and cut and pasted the same domain and API key into WP SMTP on that website – and it worked immediately.

I do have an IP allowlist set up in Mailgun, but all of these website IP addresses are on that list, so it shouldn’t be that. What other kinds of things should I try? I contacted Mailgun and they said they cannot provide support for individual configurations.

    Hi @app1e5auce,

Thanks for reaching out! Please kindly know, that this error message is returned by Mailgun. According to the Mailgun documentation, you may receive that 401 error if your Mailgun API key is invalid.

Please try recreating your API key by following this guide.

Also, if you have already whitelisted your IP, please get in touch with Mailgun support and they should be able to assist you further.

    I hope this helps. Thanks!
