• I have a problem with this site that is intermittent…sometimes the site works fine and other times it doesn’t. When it doesn’t, some images don’t load (broken link symbol) and sometimes the layout looks as if it’s missing a stylesheet. The missing images are definitely on the server, and they are in the correct place. Other people have seen the problem, so it’s not just me.

When the site is like this I can’t login – the login page appears unformatted and the login doesn’t work.

Sometimes I can load a broken image if I copy it’s link address and remove the www from it, e.g. make it https://woodlandtreasures.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/ebony-jasper-tree-brooch-1021×1024.jpg. When the site is not working properly that image (and any others that aren’t showing) won’t show up with the www prefix.

Google Console shows there are differing problems at different times. As I write this I can see the site looks fine in all browsers, but I can see there are errors when I look at the site in Incognito mode (see screenshot – https://snipboard.io/XaQdEZ.jpg).

Everything in the site is up-to-date, have tried renaming the plugins folder and using default theme instead, but the problem remains, so it’s not plugin or theme related. I’ve reloaded WordPress but no change. Have checked the .htaccess file and re-saved Permalinks. Have purged the cache.

I’ve talked to the hosting company and theme creators but no joy. I installed a caching plugin (at the suggestion of someone here, on WordPress), but no change, although I thought the site was more stable – until today.

I note that there is a 403 (Forbidden) for the domain root, which you can see in the screenshot here. Could this be causing the other issues? In other words if the host is somehow blocking this, would it also follow that other components couldn’t be found either (404)? I can now also see the following Console error…

“Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 403 (Forbidden”, which refers to /?wc-ajax=get_refreshed_fragments:1

It seems that everybody has an opinion – much appreciated of course – but nobody can actually help. I don’t know what else I can do, apart from rebuild the site as a last resort.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Not sure why this should be?

Well actually it proved easier than I thought. His old host was an outfit called EasySpace.

This was back in August of 2015, & it was a pretty rough ride till we determined that the problem was the hosting. They tried to sell him a virtual server, but he really wasn’t technically expert enough to handle it, & he had the excellent sense to admit it.

During that time, though, both our respective local spirits vendors definitively received an uptick in business lol. It was a real pleasure working w/him, as it is you.

I’d still really like to see if there are server error logs that might provide us w/some insight. But I’m wondering increasingly if we’re dealing w/a problem similar to the one we were dealing with in the case of this gentleman I spoke of earlier. His symptoms were 504 gateway errors.

    Thread Starter Tig2021

    (@tig1960)

@abletec … well done for finding this but no, it’s not Easyspace.

Funny you should mention alcohol, as I’m having a glass of wine as I work. First alcoholic drink in almost a week and very tasty it is too. I would offer you some, but not easy to get it to you!

I’m not sure how to get hold of any other server error logs. Those above were obtained by SSH. As you say, I’m pretty sure the problem is to do with the hosting/permissions, and it may be that I say to my client that we need new hosting.

It’s a pleasure working with you too. ??

Well it isn’t even 3 pm here, so I better wait a couple hours lol. I haven’t had anything alcoholic in a year & a half, so doesn’t take much probly lol.

If you use ssh, then generally speaking the logs are located in /var/log. Sometimes CPanel also has an error logs applet that you can view most recent errors in.

I’m not seeing what you’re seeing in Chrome, interestingly enough, but again, I do feel that it’s absolutely necessary to get down to a barebones install in order to see what is/is not working & hopefully determine why. It’s why I’m kind of whinging so much about error logs lol.

Yeah, I knew it wasn’t the same company. But, you know, sometimes w/some of these hosting companies, they can have different names but the same people own them. & if they’re using crappy equipment, they do so no matter what they call themselves.

It might also be interesting to see the webserver & php configuration files.

And so the plot thickens…. I’ve found some more error logs that imply the server is the problem. I’ve asked the host about this; it will be interesting to see what they say.

… the hosting co sent me a message:

    ===

I have now ran the following command on all the directories for woodland treasures
    ?
    sudo chmod 777 -R *?

This will provide all the directorys with 777 permission value. Please test and let me know how you get on!

woodlandtreasures.co.uk is looking even worse now, with the following errors:

[Tue Nov 17 13:46:06.169978 2020] [core:crit] [pid 18013] (13)Permission denied: [client 82.31.67.191:63144] AH00529: /home/woodlandtreasure/public_html/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable and that ‘/home/woodlandtreasure/public_html/’ is executable

I think it’s probably time to move all my sites to a new host.

:horrified!!!: Are you frickin kidding me? I think by your last comment you well understand the implications of all that.

It’s 9 in the morning. I didn’t indulge yesterday. After reading that, it’s beyond tempting, & I’m just now settling in w/coffee. Irish coffee, anyone?

I literally feel like I’m going to get sick–or cry–or both, cuz I’m not sure which.

The first error was your firewall keeping out someone trying to read the .user.ini file. After that, the errors are so inconsistent that it doesn’t point to any one thing except the interaction between PHP & WordPress. But clearly anyone who would change directory perms to 777 doesn’t know what they’re doing.

    Thread Starter Tig2021

    (@tig1960)

@abletec I’m considering moving the sites (and the implications of doing that), because I’ve spent so much time trying to get to the bottom of the problems with Woodland T.

Also, I’ve kind of lost faith in the hosting company now, as even though they’ve had excellent reviews for many years (which is why I chose them), there are some bad reviews starting to creep in now and that also worries me. And as you say, 777…

Yes, I discovered that the first error was the firewall keeping people out, so that’s okay, but when I didn’t questioned the hosting co earlier they couldn’t tell me what that meant. Again, that really worries me.

No coffee thanks, but I’ll have a hot chocolate please. ??

Hot chocolate, otw, but virtually only, I’m afraid. Spiked or clear? Marshmallows?

So I’ve looked & it does appear you’ve been working w/this a very long time–at least a month or more. Did you design the site?

Yes, I did design the site and all was fine until recently (probably about 2-3 months?).

I’m still thinking that maybe I need to move this site, at least.
