• I’m not too sure yet, but i think the iThemes security plugin is causing various issues on our sites, from random 404 page not found errors to files not uploading (saying that the file processing has failed)

I’ve contact our hosting provider and they tried some changes without success, they said all that is left is some issue or conflict with 1 or more of the plugins we use or with WordPress itself.

I suspected SiteOrigin page builder, but now i got these errors on a site where that is not even installed.

The plugin most in common with all the affected websites seems to be iThemes, but it could also be Jetpack or Contact Form 7, they are less likely though.

I disabled iThemes on one of our websites and for the short while i worked on it, it seemed fine, which would indicate that iThemes is at fault, but the problem is these issues are intermittent, they come and go, the site could be working 1 minute and not the next, this makes finding the problem very difficult.

These issues started around when WP 5.3 came out and as we update more sites more of them seem to be affected.

I’ve never seen 404 page not found errors pop up while working on the backend of a website. And after refreshing the page it usually works again, but sometimes it doesn’t for quite a few minutes, or the site loads very poorly, like only the most basic html, no styling, and very slowly.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

You may try checking for a plugin conflict by deactivating all other plugins and see if that helps. If it does help, then reactivate the plugins one at a time to find the culprit(s), if any.

Can you also try switching to a default WordPress theme to see if that has any impact?

You may also install the Health Check plugin to help determine the cause of the issue.

    Thanks,

Hi and sorry for the late reply, for some reason i am not receiving email notifications, someone said it’s because i use a yahoo email, so i switched to gmail.

Anyway today i think we finally figured out the problem, it seems iThemes security plugin was somehow conflicting with something my hosting company uses called “mod_security”.
They disabled it completely today and even with iThemes running i was able to work for hours without any issues.

I would love to know which specific setting it is so i can stop using it.

This fix was done on a different site: https://rwc.vhwptest.com
