    Hi.

When I click on the Abstract Booklet download, it should take me to a new webpage with the document on it. I have clicked the Redirect to File option on the download, this has preciously worked, but for some reason now it just takes me to the Error 404 Page.

I am using the updated version of Download Monitor

    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks

  • Hi @angelac3,

    Thanks for reaching out!
Can you please go to your dashboard > Settings > Permalinks > and save without changing anything.
Please let me know if this fixes it.

    Warmly,
    Mihaela

    Hey Angie,

Could you check if you have an .htaccess file inside dlm_uploads, and if so could you please tell us if it’s empty or has some writing inside ( if it has writing could you please tell us what it says ) ?

Also, could you please go to dashboard > Downloads > Settings > Advanced > Miscellaneous and clear the transients ?

    Kind Regards!

    Thank you

Yes it says Deny from All

I have cleared the transients but its still not working. I presume the text in htaccess has something to do with it?

    Thank you

Thank you for the info. Could you please specify what server type you are using? Normally, if you redirect to files that are located in the dlm_uploads folder, the visitors can’t access them because, as you assumed in the previous reply, that .htaccess denies access to them, which is the default functionality of Download Monitor.

The redirect to file option works in 2 scenarios:
    1. The file is not located in the dlm_uploads folder, so it was uploaded to the WP installation using the Media Library ( recommended )
    2. You delete / empty the .htaccess from the dlm_uploads, but if you do this all the files inside this folder could be viewed by visitors, there will be nothing to restrain them ( NOT RECOMMENDED )

Could you try using the first scenario, using Media Library, and tell us if that is what you are wishing for ?

    Kind Regards!

I am not sure what you mean by Server Type – we use CPanel – is this what you mean?

We use the download monitor to upload the files, normally the download goes into the website as a file and the user just downloads it but there are a few files that we want them to open directly on the webpage and previously when we clicked the redirect to file option it worked but now it doesnt.

I have uploaded using the Media Library and that does work, but I cant understand why it has all of a sudden changed anyway?

    Thank you for your help

    Hey Angie,

I was referring to the web server type, is it Apache/NGINX… ( you can see this if you go to dashboard > Tools > Site Health > Info > Server ).

It may be that previously you did not have the .htaccess file inside the dlm_uploads folder, or it was empty or your host changed something ( NGINX needs other kind of setup to restrict access to files from a folder ).

For security purposes, so that random visitors won’t be able to download files that aren’t meant to be downloaded by everyone, it is recommended to keep the .htaccess with it’s contents in place ( or, in the case of NGINX, the config setup ).

    Hope this clears things up.

    Kind Regards!
    Razvan
