404 error after installation on 1&1 servers

    I have already installed WP on one server which went perfectly so I’m stuck with this. Using 1&1 as host, set up the SQL database and entered the details in the wp-config.php file. Uploaded to a directory. When entering the URL (I am using a subdomain to get the content designed) and the usual /wp-admin/install.php I get a 404. I can navigate to the readme.html and it comes up fine using this subdomain. Have already deleted the entire installation + database once and started from scratch. Any help appreciated.

  • Are you sure that PHP is running on the server? Is the url correct?

    Have just checked into the hosting package – it’s a windows only server which was select. Need to switch it to Linux. Thx for your quick answer.
