Neither I nor my readers can get a page to open up by clicking on “read more.” We cannot look at previous pages by clicking on “older entries.” We cannot go to the site by clicking on the daily digest. In all cases we get the same error message, which is:

    Not Found

The requested URL /2010/10/21/ready-reference-guide-there-is-no-need-to-fear/ was not found on this server.
    Apache/2.0.54 Server at stevebeckow.com Port 80

The site is https://sbeckow.com. I’m using WordPress 3.0.1. I’m operating from a Mac Mini, OS 10.6.5. Firefox browser.

Mediatemple.net, the server, say it’s not a server issue. The content is being uploaded to the directory and it’s not a connection problem with the database. They suggest that it may be a problem with the way WordPress is creating entries with the database or referencing them.

Even if they were correct, I don’t have the computer smarts to know what to do about the problem.

    Can anyone help me please?

    Thank you,

    Steve Beckow

    Have you tried:

-deactivating all plugins. If the problem goes away, activate them individually to find the culprit?

If you don’t have access to to your admin area, try deactivating them manually via FTP or phpMyAdmin.

-switching to the default theme (Twenty Ten) by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes to rule out any theme-specific issue?

If you don’t have access to your admin area, then access your server via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

OK, I deactivated all plugins but that did not change the situation.

    My niece/developer said:

“just looked at my mediatemple.net account… I think the traffic from your site is just too much for the plan i have purchased. That never occurred to me until now because i thought it was unlimited but i went into my account and looked at something called gpu’s and it says i have purchased 1000 and I’m at 1400. I don’t even know what that means!?”

Could a bandwidth issue cause the whole site to shut down and a 404 message to appear?

    (@steve-beckow)

I’ll try changing the theme now.

    i have purchased 1000 and I’m at 1400.

I don’t know what those numbers are.

Just contact your hosting provider and discuss the problem with them. Also check with them if you need to upgrade the hosting account.

They are gpu’s and relate to bandwidth, I think.

I will phone mediatemple.net but so far they’ve said it isn’t a server problem but a WordPress problem. Round and round I go.

Have you tried a few possibilities I suggested before?

    Thread Starter Steve Beckow

    (@steve-beckow)

I’ve been away at a medical appointment.

So far I deactivated all my plug-ins and tried the site again. The same 404 error reappeared.

I’m now talking to mediatemple.net to see if this is a bandwidth or gpu issue.

    After that, I’ll change themes.

At the moment, I can’t even access the home page so the issue has moved further into unworkability.

Any ideas on a web developer I can contact to pay to help me out of this deep pit I’m in?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Where did you install WordPress on your domain?

    Thread Starter Steve Beckow

    (@steve-beckow)

I’m afraid I don’t know how to answer that question. I don’t know what “where” refers to or what answer you’d want from me.

It’s hosted on mediatemple.net’s gs server in Los Angeles. Is that the answer you’re looking for?

    WordPress?

I should mention that the site home page totally disappeared but then I deactivated all the plugs-in and the issue I’ve been having with the site seems to have lifted. I’m now going to reactivate the plugins one by one.

Back to you in perhaps half an hour.

You installed WordPress on your server. Where did you upload the WordPress folder to? If you used a 1-click install, where did you ask the installer to place WordPress on your site? Right now I can’t see any evidence of WordPress on your site.

    Thread Starter Steve Beckow

    (@steve-beckow)

OK, I think it’s pretty clear that it’s a plug-in conflict I’ve been having. Everything is up and working again.

Many thanks to you wonderful people who assisted me to find out what was happening to my site.

    Thank you,

Esmi, I don’t know what you mean by “your site.”

Do you mean https://www.setmeuponehost.com? Or do you mean stevebeckow.com?

I also don’t know what to reply to you when you ask me where I located my WordPress folder to. I think I’ll have to ask my developer to answer those questions.

    Thanks,

    Steve

No problem. Glad to hear that you’re up & running again.

Yes, thank you very much, Esmi. It was the information I received here that allowed me to solve the problem.

I’m very gtateful for the help.
