• Hi,

I have a problem with my WordPress MultiSite install, in particular with the main menu items. I am running about 15 sites in the network, and all of them use the same theme, Legatus Premium Theme, which includes 3 layout menus. I am having problems with the Main Menu, which is the “heaviest” far all of them.

I get a 404 error page when I add a menu item to my Main Menu on some of my WordPress Multisite platform’s sites. I have been in touch with my hosting provider and I have understood that my server configuration should be ok, so they cannot support me anymore for this issue (I already raised max_input_vars value up, but no success with it).

The problem is really odd, it only came up recently, because it occurs even if I save the currently active menu without adding any menu item.

I will appreciate your help, I have no other way to get support

    Thank you

When you say “heaviest”, what exactly do you mean? There are some limits to the number of items that menus can handle…

Or, by any chance are you running sites in multiple languages on your network?

I have three active menus per site in my network. When I say that the Main Menu is my heaviest menu I mean that that one is the menu including most items, for each site. Anyway, I am talking about 70-80 menu items in the worst cases.

I had a try activating the theme Twenty Fifteen and I noticed I have no problem with menus, using the same menu items.

And, yes, each site in my network has a different language (not using multilingual tools anyway, each site has its own language): could it be relevant for this issue?

    Thank you

Three is a limit on the number of menu items, and you may be hitting it. I think it’s somewhere around 75 items.

I don’t know much about multiple languages in multisite, but you might find this article helpful. Even though it’s about a specific plugin, it does offer some insights into how multisite uses multiple languages and possible menu issues.

Hi Bet, sorry for the delay getting back to you.
Thanks for your tip, but actually I don’t think it could be a matter of WP languages.

I noticed that changing the active theme I do not get the error anymore, I can easily deal with my menus.

I am using a Legatus Child Theme for all of my network’s sites, and I have no menu issues if I switch the active theme to Legatus (Non-Child) Theme.

Which could be wrong with my child theme? Should I add some functions to its functions.php to solve this?

Legatus is a paid theme, which we don’t have access here to test. Support for issues like this is part of what you paid for, so you should direct your questions over to Legatus support. It looks like they do that here: https://support.orange-themes.com/?envato_item_id=5089116

I’ve already done that, I’m waiting for a reply by their side.

Thanks Bet, I will post here the solution once they will find it.
