404 error when trying to get to wp-admin/install.php

    Hi all,

    I am new to wordpress – this is my first installation. I have downloaded the latest copy (2.7.1), have edited to config settings, and am now trying to install using this URL:
    https://ultravgroup.com.au/wp-admin/install.php

    But get this message:

    Not Found
    The requested URL /cgi-bin/php5.cgi/wp-admin/install.php was not found on this server.

    Apache/1.3.41 Server at ultravgroup.com.au Port 80

    I can see all the files are there using my FTP client, but can’t work out why it won’t run. The read me file is there:
    https://ultravgroup.com.au/readme.html

    I have called MelbourneIT (my web host) and they were useless….

    Any help would eb much appreciated.

    From where do you downloaded your wordpress.

    Try downloading from https://www.wordpress.com and then try again.

    I downloaded them from this site, https://www.ads-software.com/download/

    The error message I am getting is:
    Not Found
    The requested URL /cgi-bin/php5.cgi/wp-admin/install.php was not found on this server.

    Apache/1.3.41 Server at ultravgroup.com.au Port 80

    in the .htaccess file, it has the following config:

    ## START PHP
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
    Action application/x-httpd-php /cgi-bin/php5.cgi
    ## STOP PHP

    When you look in the /cgi-bin folder, there is no file called:
    /cgi-bin/php5.cgi

    I’m guessing the 404 is happening because the file /cgi-bin/php5.cgi doesn’t exist. Does this mean that PHP 5 isn’t installed?

    Ok, so I commented out the values in the .htaccess file and all is good now. Not sure why they were there in the first place, but at least it installs now….

    Hey rwilliams, I am having the same problem. What do you mean “I commented out the values in the .htaccess file”. I have very limited knowledge about these things, but any help in getting me up and running would be appreciated!

    Simple friend, rwilliams deleted all the contents of the .htaccess file.

    Am I right williams.
