404 errors

I’ve been trying for a week to build a simple website; I’ve built 5 others without all these problems. I’ve tried 3 different templates and went though my webhost to re-load WP to my site but no matter what I do, I keep getting 404 errors at different times. Sometimes it’s a Homepage only 404 error (but you can see the beginnings of my template), sometimes it’s a Hostgator 404 error, and other times, like right now where it’s just a Page Not Found 404 error. I’m completely stumped.

I’ve checked all the standard things: I have my Home page listed as my static frontpage (I’m using WP as a website not a blog) both in the Dashboard and the template. I’ve tried changing my permalinks but get different problems with each one.

Can anyone help? I’m going crazy here!
