404 errors logged that really aren't

    Thank you for the recent update that logs 404 errors.

    Reviewing those logs this morning I see that your plugin is logging 404 errors that my visitors don’t even see.

    I’m using the plugin “Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin” to meta-redirect some of my WordPress pages to other site URLs. Each time this happens, you are logging it as a 404, but the person using the site simply sees the page I meant for them to see. Nothing wrong is happening, and nothing malicious, so it doesn’t need to be logged at all.

    You’re very welcome and thank you for reporting these issues.

    It seems that in the back-end such setup is generating a 404 prior to redirecting the user, and the redirect plugin is acting upon the 404 prior to it being sent to the user. So the plugin is recording such activity.

    We will definitely look into this and see we can work around this and will keep you posted.

    P.S. the plugin does not just log wrong and malicious things, but everything that is happening on your WordPress ??

    Alright, that’s fair enough, but if there is a secret 404 happening instead of a 301 like I would have expected, then this is impacting my SEO. I’m anxious to learn what you find after you investigate.

    Hello,

    I did create a test lab with your setup though the plugin is not reporting any 404 errors, so it must be something specific to your setup rather than one of the plugins not compatible.

    So maybe you can check:

    1. If you have other plugins that are doing some sort of redirect?
    2. Or maybe you have some of the redirects which are resulting in a 404?
    3. Did you check if the plugin is capturing a 404 error on all redirects or only on specific ones?
    4. Did you open the logs and try to manually navigate to the reported URL? If yes does it redirect or do you get a 404 error page?
