404 Not redirecting

I’m having a problem when setting the redirect method/type to 404 the redirect to a custom 404 page doesn’t occur, the page just goes blank. For example: /category/breast-lift 404 redirect to /custom-404
Again, the page just goes blank. Other type redirects in the plugin to that page work fine, for instance if I change the redirect type to 301.
