404 on Login

Hello, I am trying to login to my wordpress site, but when I type in https://www.sitename.com/wp-login.php I get a 404 error. The site is not in the root directory since it is a site I am developing and it is not ready yet, but I assumed as long as the address was input correctly you could just add the wp-login at the end and log in. Am i missing something or could I just have a corrupt wp-login file?
