I have a fresh install of WP 3.7.1, and just set up the multisite. It appears to let me set up new sites, but when I try to visit the sub-domains, or the dashboard of the sub-domain I get a 404 error (not from wordpress).

I’m pretty sure the wildcard DNS is working. If I ping [anything].mydomain.com I get a response.

I feel like I’m missing something really obvious, but it’s driving me nuts, so I really appreciate the help.

    Thank you

If the 404 is not a WP one, then you did setup DNS right, but you did not set up the virtual hosts correctly. How did you set up on your server (not WP and not DNS) for the subdomains?

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for your response.

Well, that may be my problem. I couldn’t find any documentation on how I am supposed to set up sup-domains. I have cPanel, and when it creates sub-domains, it places a folder inside the web root of the main domain.

Can you help explain how I am supposed to set up the sub-domains?

We can only give you general directions because every single webhost is different. :/ I know that really sucks to hear.

On cpanel, in GENERAL, one can go to subdomains and make a new one. When you do, the default is to create a folder like /public_html/subdomainname and you want to change that to /public_html only. Or some of them let you make a subdomain of * (yes, that symbol) which defaults to /public_html

If that doesn’t work, ask your webhost “How do I make wildcard subdomains?”

Ohhhh! You’re right. I was wondering how WP would know where the subdomain was located related to the web root, but setting the subdomain to the public_html directory makes sense.

Thanks Mika (and sorry for calling you Mike previously)
