404 Permalink issue

    Hi,

    From the start of our new website I have been having issues with a 404 permalink errors. Randomly each week or every two weeks 50% of ALL the pages would be set into a 404 page because some of the URL’s were rewritten inside of the htaccess file.

    The solution was simple, simply save the permalinks again and everything was fine. But before the issue is picked up, the website would be 50% unusable for several minutes or even hours.

    I have been searching everywhere to find the where this issue is coming from and then someone told me that Yoast rewrites permalinks in the htaccess file. Now I have disabled Yoast and so far the issue has not come back.

    Are you aware that Yoast can cause these kinds of issues and is there a way to use Yoast and not have these issues pop-up again?

    Hello Wappiez,

    Thanks for reaching out regarding the 404 and permalink issues.

    When permalinks are enabled on your site in General > Permalinks, WordPress automatically will modify your .htaccess file with the latest rewrite rules. So if your .htaccess file has owner write access (very common), WordPress will write to the file with a block of directives. This is not caused by the Yoast SEO plugin in itself.
