404.php not working

    I have a 404.php in my theme.
    I added ErrorDocument 404 /MYDIRECTORY/index.php?error=404 to my .htacces file.

    When I am trying to check my 404, the page is redirecting to index.php, not to 404.php.

    If I remove the .htaccess file the 404 page is blank.

    Please help ??
