Hi, I tried installing the plugin which looks like it will exactly fit my sites needs. Unfortunately clicking on messages just results in 404’s. I can see a number of users have already experienced the issue. I’m not really sure what’s causing it on my site and I’m looking for any help or advice you can give to resolve it. Thanks in advance.

  • If your forums page is called ‘forums’, then you should save permalinks as well as the Forums Settings – it will probably take a little while before the 404 error disappears.

In my case the link didn’t work because my forums page is not called just forums – the page is called user-forums. Samuel recommended that I replace part of the code in loader.php. You can read about it here https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/links-to-pm#post-8242961

I also saved permalinks after implementing this code.

Thanks for getting back to me on this issue. Like your own site my forums page is called something else which is the source of the problem. I will have a look at the instructions provided on your post. Unfortunately I’m not a big developer/coder so it may be beyond my technical capability.

Hopefully Samuel will be able to provide an update to the plugin at some point in the future with this limitation removed.

    Thanks again for your help.

I’ve followed the instructions but now whenever I click on the messages link it just takes me to my user profile. I note however that you said there was a lag between you changing the setting and the plugin working. How long did it take for you to resolve? I’ve also tried deactivating and reactivating the plugin but it had no effect.

Are you the only user on this site? Where do you click for messages? In your profile you should see the link to Messages on the left hand side (along with Topics, Replies etc).
Provided that a user created a topic or a reply in the forum, you should see a link called Send “user” a message in their profile.
In any case, if the messages link has appeared on your site, then it is correct – it takes you to your profile and shows you that you have no messages at the moment. I know this can be confusing – it was for me at first.
