• Hello!

Ahrefs is pointing at a broken javascript line in all my pages.

It’s an error similar to what I’ve seen from some user in the forums, and I fear it’s negatively affecting my site’s page rankings.

    This is the line: https://anebarone.com/wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/modules/recaptcha/index.js?ver=5.7.3?

    Host support – Hostgator

I contacted my host to check if ModSecurity was blocking CF7 and asked them to check the error logs. They confirmed that there was an issue and said they fixed it.

I checked it a few days later and the error persisted, though.

Using plugins to remove the script in pages in which the CF7 form isn’t loaded

I tried using the ‘Scripts Removal for Contact Form 7’ plugin, By Amit Mittal, but it made no difference as well (I activated it, cleared cache, used the website for a week, and as I checked the Ahref new logs today, it’s still pointing at errors. So I removed the plugin entirely.)

    Info

    PHP version7.4.33

    I’m using google’s recaptcha v3

Theme: Twenty Twenty-Three (twentytwentythree) — it’s my default theme already.

    Plugins

    Akismet Anti-Spam
    CF7
    EWWW Image Optimizer
    Flamingo
    IndexNow
    iThemes Security
    Site Kit by Google
    Redirection
Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery
W3 Total Cache (I tried deactivating it and scanning the site again, no changes)
    Yoast SEO

    —-

I may try to disable all plugins again and check the issue, but I feel a bit lost doing it since those plugins are essential to my site, like iThemes.

Are there any pointers and insights that I could be missing? Something else I should try?

I haven’t tested other contact plugins, but I’ve used CF7 for years and enjoy it, I didn’t want to change. It also has the Flamingo feature of keeping a backup of any sent messages, which I find great. So I really want to keep CF7.

    Ty!

Where on the site do you have the form having the issue?

Hi @takayukister, thank you for your time!

The form is used only in the page https://anebarone.com/contact/

But it has been loading the same recaptcha file in all pages and it seems to be broken. This is the site audit report by Ahrefs listing 300+ pages with the same issue: https://imgur.com/a/4RhxcRo

I just found something, though, that may be useful for other users.

ModSecurity also blocks Ahrefs from crawling the site, which may be the cause of those error logs. So when contacting the host, we should ask both about checking CF7 AND Ahrefs in the error logs.

Would it be alright to leave this topic open for a little longer? I’ll try to talk to Hostgator again and return with any news.

    Thank you!

Sure. Please add information here when you find something.

As you know, HTTP 409 is an error typically seen when there are WAF-related issues. I don’t think it has something to do with Contact Form 7.

I talked to them again and mentioned both to check the Ahrefs bots, and WAF issues.

Hostgator guaranteed there were no issues on their side, and that those crawl bots were whitelisted in ModSecurity as well.

I scanned the site again and Ahrefs is still reporting the same conflict issues.

I’m back to testing plugins (could be a cache issue) in the meantime, so, sadly, for now I have no answers. However, if I have any updates I’ll bring those to the forums!

    Thank you for the support!

We found another website with an in-depth log of messages between the poster (another hostgator/Bluehost/Endurance user) facing the exact same issue.

I’ll leave it here in case it is helpful. I recommend folks with those 409 errors read the whole thing.

The post lists many possible culprits and suggestions, but we found out that our websites’ IP is blacklisted in 2 spam lists, via this website. According to the spam lists responsible for the blacklist, our case is the host’s fault — for not controlling/banning other ips from our “neighboring block” that are malicious.

    ??

I’m tired of contacting Hostgator for now LOL, so I’ll give it a few days and gather some screenshots and data before calling them again.

    Cheers ?

@aneherdes – I’m on hostgator and having CF7 409 errors, but only when connecting to the site from certain nodes of our CDN (we used Quic CDN and Litespeed Cache). Where did you finally get to with your issue?

@aneherdes how did you finally resolve this?

@aneherdes – did you ever get this resolved? I’m still struggling with this issue?
