I used to be able to write 1. XY as a heading. Since the 5.3 update, the editor is forcing this text into a numbered list, and you can’t prevent it. The only way to get around it is to first put a . before the text, add a space, and then back up and put the number in.

This is only an issue with the number 1. Other numbers work okay.

Is it possible to turn this off? If not, I don’t get why you messed with things that were working fine before.

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site. You can then use its admin bar menu to turn on/off plugins and themes one at a time.

No, you have to add a space after the dot, as you would in a list. The issue is that I don’t want it to be force-converted to a list; I want to keep it as a heading.

That’s really annoying!

And changing the list block to a heading block removes the “1.”.

I think this may be a bug… I’m checking and finding out where it should get reported.

I had ran into this issue in the past as well and there was a solution in the works with an open ticket for the editor. I know this is not really helpful right now without being able to link you to the ticket but it at least verifies the problem by another person seeing it before ??

Actually it was this ticket here that I opened: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/17289 and it was closed by introduction of undo patterns here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/14776
