• Hi,

After updating to WordPress v5.5 and updating the Classic Editor plugins, Text View / Add Media are not working. I click on the Text tab to edit the text and nothing happens. I can edit via the Visual editor only. When I click on the Add Media tab, nothing happens.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Thanks,
    Daphne

  • @azaozz Shouldn’t a change like this be mentioned somewhere (edit: somewhere people that don’t follow WP closely will look)? There’s nothing on the release post, no warning inside the WordPress admin area/about.php, stuff like the “Site Health” page doesn’t work…

I had no idea this change would happen with 5.5 or that the plugin Caleb mentioned was available (and that plugin doesn’t allow us to completely dismiss the messages).

In my case it was an old plugin (Faster Image Insert) causing the problem. It’s not something I can just stop using because WordPress doesn’t insert images in the order they are uploaded or allows me to set alt texts in bulk.

… many things not working, switching from visual/text NOT working, add media NOT working, most used tags NOT working, I’ve tried de-activating, clearing cache and re-activating, same issues.

It would be really helpful if you can post the JS errors you see in the browser tools, at least the first error there.

That’s a very good point, @azaozz. I looked at the initial errors and found this:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'opera' of undefined
    at jquery.ba-postmessage.min.js?ver=###:9
    at jquery.ba-postmessage.min.js?ver=###:9

The file belongs to the Network Publisher plugin by linksalpha:
    ./wp-content/plugins/network-publisher/jquery.ba-postmessage.min.js

I disabled the Network Publisher plugin and now everything is working just fine. I’ll notify linksalpha.

    Thanks for the assistance, @azaozz.

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/

For me it shows the problem being in the amazon product in a post plugin… this helper did sort out the editor for me for now, hopefully the other plugin will update.

“jQuery Migrate Helper — Warnings encountered
This page generated the following warnings:

    mysite/wp-content/plugins/amazon-product-in-a-post-plugin/js/amazon-admin.js: jQuery.fn.live() is deprecated

Please make sure you are using the latest version of all of your plugins, and your theme. If you are, you may want to ask the developers of the code mentioned in the warnings for an update.”

When installing that migrate helper plugin I am also getting the same error message on a website using a custom theme.
But what is weird is that the classic editor works with the older version of WordPress.

    Same here.

Most features are not working. The Bold,Italic, etc buttons have also gone missing.

Hope to see the fix released soon.

OK, I can confirm that installing the ‘Enable jQuery Migrate Helper’ plugin mentioned above resolved the issue for me.

Hi, I solved it like this: go to “Classic Editor” plugin options, select Block editor and save. try to create a new item and move it to the trash. Return to the options page and select “Classic Editor”, save and everything should work as before the update

I think I found how to handle the update.

If you can before updating to 5.5, install Enable jQuery Migrate Helper. After it is activated:
    – No warnings show. This is the easiest scenario. Just by installing the plugin, you may have fixed the issue. On one of my sites, this was the case
    – Or you will see warnings on which plugins have issues. This will help you determine how to handle the update. Do you deactivate the plugins at issue? Do you find a replacement plugin? Once you’ve decided on how to handle the issues and have resolved them, run the updates.

If you’ve run the updates and can’t go back to a previous backup, at least the Enable jQuery Migrate Helper will identify the plugin issues so you can find a solution.

I have over 100 sites to check so hopefully, this works either way for all of them.

    Hello @azaozz

Please note that after I updated to WordPress 5.5 and Classic Editor V1.6, I cannot view/edit old posts, the post showing blank (white). However, I am not receiving any error.
For new posts, Classic Editor is working fine.

    Could you please help?

    Thank You!

I can confirm that installing the ‘Enable jQuery Migrate Helper’ plugin mentioned above resolved the issue for me as well.
Is this a temp solution? Shall we keep this plugin always installed?

    Thanks!

@cnemnom, what happens when you disable every plugin except for Classic Editor?

Edit: Cancel that. I see you’ve used the workaround.

I had the same problem — no text editor, though adding media tab did seem to work. Also, can’t set any links — control-K doesn’t work, and when I add the links through the dashboard, nothing happens when you click the gear icon.

The jquery workaround does seem to fix the problem.

I’m holding off on updating my clients to 5.5 because of this. I also found that deactivating Yoast SEO would restore functionality on some sites. It did NOT show up in errors in the EjMH plugin tho.

I tried @maxrat suggestion within the Classic editor settings and that did not work for the blog that has the issues.

I did use @daphnetalbot suggestion and the Enable jQuery Migrate Helper plugin and that worked. I’m still holding off on my personal blog for now.
