I just did an upgrade to 3.0 and I am now unable to log in to my site. I can view the main site fine but when I go to the login page and enter my user name and password I receive this error –

Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

  • Exact same thing happened to me. I’ll add that I use 1and1 hosting and I often am unable to use automatic install for plugins (or upgrades – this was a manual upgrade). I was able to get the admin panel back by downgrading to 2.9.2.

    On 1&1, try adding:
    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
to the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

Thats too funny I’m also on 1and1 and I have always had problems upgrading or installing plugins. I also did this upgrade manually and when I had the problem I also went back to 2.9.2. I just added to line to the htaccess file and I was able to upgrade it from the admin page!! Thank you!

    Like a charm! Thanks ddame!

I mean, thanks esmi! … And ddame for opening the topic.

Glad to hear everything’s now running smoothly.

ok so I know I should probably know this already but where is the htaccess file and can I get to it via ftp without downgrading to 2.9.2?
    thanks.
