Our site switched from the old theme to Astra by itself, which I had installed but didn’t want to activate yet. I think it caused the site to crash and give me a 500 error, and now will not let me log in with my admin account. I also have an editor account which I don’t really use, so I changed the password on that account and was able to log in that way but can’t change the theme back or uninstall plugins. I also tried the same with my admin account, but it didn’t work. I’m also new to this company and wordpress as well, and was accessing the site through Google Chrome so I don’t have any files installed on my work computer to change. I’m freaking out and I don’t know how to fix the critical error which won’t go away and won’t give me the access I need to fix this

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @emilyzemanek,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble logging in. I know site errors and lack of access can be really stressful, so let’s see if we can figure out how to resolve this.

There are a couple of ways to access your admin abilities to disable plugins and themes without needing to log in. Here’s an explanation on how to do that: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus

If the theme switch is what caused the 500 error, you’ll be able to check that by switching to a default theme (like Twenty Twenty-Two).

Let me know if this was able to help at all.

Thank you so much for responding. I did not have a phpMyAdmin or a FTP set up for this site beforehand, would I still be able to install and use either to troubleshoot the problem? Additionally, I am unable to change the theme as my account that’s usable is Editor status.

I did not have a phpMyAdmin or a FTP set up for this site beforehand,

These are not things you set up in WordPress, but tools that come with your hosting account credentials.

Additionally, I am unable to change the theme as my account that’s usable is Editor status.

Follow the suggested process to disable or delete the problematic theme or plugin.

This assumes you’re unable to log in to the WordPress dashboard, so does not require a WordPress account (just FTP or your hosting account).

After this, you should then (hopefully) be able to login with your WordPress admin account and switch to whatever theme you want to use.

Thank you so much, I was able to figure it out with your help!

This is happening to my site SporesWorldwide but these fixes aren’t working. Any idea?
