500 error when cloning ID=1 site

    When I go to clone the root site it times out and returns a 500 error. I have looked through the support forums and elsewhere but none of the code changes have worked. I have increased php timeout, no change. Increased upload size, no change. Increased server space, no change.

    The uploads folder cloning does not complete, no images are moved.

    A site is created, but it is incomplete.

    As you can see the process dies when it hits the copying of the uploads folders. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for all the details and mentioning everything you’ve tried.

    We’ve seen file permissions cause 500 errors before. The best thing is to create the simplest test possible to try to narrow down the core cause of the issue.

    If there isn’t an obviously file permissions issue, you could try creating a new vanilla site using the standard WP Sites > Add New in Network Admin. Then, edit the Hello World post and add a single image. Now, try to clone that. Success? Or not? That might provide some clues.

    What your site migrated at any point recently? Or did anything with hosting change? Regardless, it might be worth it to check / reset file permissions. Also pay attention to the owner account on the files. If it’s different than the account that runs PHP in the apache (or litespeed) context that could cause issues too. You might have to chmod or chown files and/or directories.

    Hope you find it! Sometimes an issue like that can be like a needle in a haystack. Let us know if you turn up any new interesting data points or get it sorted!

    OK, I went through and made a new site, set twentyfourteen as the theme, launched the site, edited the hello dolly, uploaded a file and then cloned that site.

    Worked great.

    Then went back to try to clone my template site, 500 error again.

    Checked folder permissions, all set to 755 recursive from /uploads.

    Checked the folders for images and it seems the process quit half way through migrating a file – so it is able to start the process of cloning the image folders and the images – it just doesn’t complete.

    Have tried editing .htaccess to increase php time, and also uploading en edited php.ini file to wp-admin. No luck still.

    Off to call my host. ??

    Arg! You’re doing all the right things.

    Can you pinpoint it to a specific file. For example, if you do it multiple times, does it die on the exact same spot each time in the file system?

    Maybe a corrupt file or something else similar? If you could identify the file you could pull it and see.

    Another thing, is the total time an even number like 30 seconds or 60 or whatever. Sometimes there are global max_execution_times that override.

    @ivanguinea did you try all the same things that @redfez did?

    It’s most likely a memory limit, timeout issue, or file permissions and may be hosting related. Can you both share what host (maybe it’s the same)?

    We just released an entirely new version. I don’t know if it will help with this issue or not, but it’s worth a shot. If the issue was outside the Cloner, then it could still be there even with the new version. But the new version does have better logging and better validation / error checking. All the best!
