500 Error! WP Site crashes with PHP Fatal Error

    I have created this topic before.

    The error that i receive multiple times on my debug log is as follows:

    This crash suddenly occurs while just surfing through the site. I wasn’t even on the payment page when the site crashed. The website goes down without me knowing and once down, I have to access the FTP to rename the plugin folder for the site to work again. I then go to the Plugins page and reactivate the Braintree Plugin.

    I renamed the PLUGIN FOLDER ‘/plugins/woocommerce-gateway-paypal-powered-by-braintree’ and the site started working again.

    There is a fatal conflict in the plugin.

    This crash also occurs when updating other plugins. For example, if I update WooCommerce, the complete site crashes until I manually go to the FTP and rename Braintree plugin folder.

    @dodgehat I took a look at your debug.log and it appears that there are a lot of notices in there, and it’s only logs from today, not from any previous days. It looks like there may be an outdated plugin, or a plugin using outdated methods/functions. Can you confirm that everything is up to date?

    Can you also go to WooCommerce > Status and copy/paste the System Status Report for us?

    This issue has been there since I first installed and tested the plugin almost 8 months ago. Even after repeated updates and re-installs, there’s been no luck fixing the crash issue.

    I also emailed Braintree Support. Here’s what they replied:

    We’re currently looking further into this issue now, but it was a known issue for us at the time. You shouldn’t see this type of thing going forward, as it was caused by a capacity issue that’s since been addressed. Our engineers are currently working on a permanent fix that should be pushed out shortly.

    That being said, if you’re still experiencing these issues, by all means let us know ASAP so we can look into it further. I can only assume the errors were due to issues on our side, but it’s possible there’s something else going on. Please send over some screenshots and timestamps to look into this further. Ideally we can take a look at a test site where we can test this out ourselves.

    @dodgehat Do you have another server or local environment you can copy the site to to see if you receive the same error there? The way the code works is the main plugin file includes the file with the WC_Braintree class, and if that was failing, there would be notices about it. If that file has been included properly, then it should be working unless there’s a conflict with the server.

    I believe it may be server related due to this issue hasn’t come up anywhere else. If you Google “Class ‘WC_Braintree’ not found”, your threads are the only ones that come up directly related to the issue.

    Well I usually test on Localhost. Never encountered a crash on localhost. You may be right that there is a conflict between the server and braintree classes. Question now is how can I pinpoint this out.

    What I can do is to make the crash happen again, but this time turn all debugging on. I will copy and paste all the errors here along with a screenshot.

    This error sheds some light on what’s going on:

    PHP Fatal error: Class ‘WC_Braintree’ not found in /var/www/clients/client10/web11/web/wp-content/plugins/woocommerce-gateway-paypal-powered-by-braintree___/class-wc-braintree.php on line 30

    I look a look at the code, and it appears that the WC_Braintree class is called before it is defined. I spoke with a developer about this, and this should be fine, and is fine for all other users of the plugin. There must be something specific about your installation of PHP that is causing the error to appear. Is it possible for you to switch PHP versions on your host?

    I feel this might be the issue as well. Since we don’t have our hosting in-house, I have made a request for changing/upgrading the PHP version on the server.

    I have to say I run my own VPN server and it has approx a dozen WP sites on it. All of them at one time have had PHP errors, once I update and configure to the latest WP, and update and configure to at least a later, if not latest version, of PHP – it all works out. No errors on all 12 sites at this time. A couple did or do run woo commerce as well, without issues.

    Side note, if it’s taken a week or more for your host to get back to you, it may be time to find a new host IMO.

    My host did get back to me but they are telling me that they just installed Debian 8.10 Jesse which runs PHP Version: 5.6.33 and MySQL Version: 5.5.60.

    I told them that all hosting companies are now running the latest versions of PHP and MySQL and that if they cannot upgrade soon, we will change our hosting company. Haven’t heard back from them yet after this for a couple of days now.
