The plugin has been functioning flawlessly since our site launched back in March. However, as of yesterday the home page that uses the FTS shortcodes consistently creates a 500 Internal Server Error unless the plugin is deactivated.

Any thoughts as to what may be going on? We hope this can be resolved as we are seeing a large discussion across social media due to a company campaign that started just yesterday.

Thank you in advance for any support you can provide.

Sounds like a coincidence the feeds went down when adding the Instagram feed. Even regenerating the app token for Instagram would have no impact on the front end unless the shortcode was added.

Since you did say things were working before with no issues, maybe it is a another plugin or your theme that could be causing the problem. Usually we suggest you turn off all other plugins and switch your theme for a moment and see if the errors continue. If you find it is a plugin conflict the next thing we suggest is to turn on your plugins one by one until the problem occurs again. I know this can be daunting especially when you have a live site but it’s really the only way to see, unless you have a development server on the save host.

If that has no impact, maybe you can check with your host one last time and tell them you are running a social plugin that retrieves data from outside API’s to create info on your site and the site is timing out. Let them know this plugin has been available for over 4 years and we have only had a handful of these types of issues that have been reported in that time and see if they can assist in why the server is taking so long to retrieve the info.

I went ahead and deactivated all other plugins and switched to Twenty Sixteen but the page with all three feed shortcodes still would not load.

It seems to work periodically with only Facebook and Twitter but even without Instagram it intermittently will not load.

I will reach out to the webhost company and see where I can get.

Thanks again Spencer, I will be back in touch to let you know what they have to say.

    Stay tuned…

I am waiting for the hosting company to implement a change to the php settings and hope that will be the solution. I will post the outcome here as soon as I know where we are. If it is successful I will be certain to explain exactly what was done on their end to potentially help others.

The hosting provider noted yesterday: “If it is timing out I would suggest adding a phprc file which will increase the php values.”

We had them go ahead and setup that file as needed as they also mentioned: “if it is timing out and is a plugin on wordpress the phprc file will generally fix it”

Unfortunately, this did not seem to make any difference so we are back to square one. I am hoping we can resolve this and have replied to the hosting provider as well to let them know their solution has seemingly made no difference.

Let me know what you think, thanks!

That is an interesting solution to fix the issue, haven’t hear that suggested before. Will be interesting to see what they say about it not working.

Who are you hosting with if you don’t mind me asking and what kind of server do you have? Shared, dedicated?

Dreamhost, I believe it is shared but will confirm when I hear back from them.

    Hi Spencer,

The hosting provider came back and acknowledged that we are indeed on shared server space. Rather than check the first time I was in touch with them they only just now checked the error log it seems and noted that our scripts are being automatically killed by their process watcher script due to the website going over memory limits on the shared server.

Their primary solution was sharing a link to help optimize our wordpress website but the content on the page they suggested is over three years old making it outdated and in some instances irrelevant.

I feel stuck at this point and don’t understand why we are able to use this plugin on other websites with no problem and this site has been up for months now without issue until this past weekend. I do not blame you or your plugin but rather the web hosting company as they provide a different answer every time I speak with them. They are supposed to have tech support but it feels more like dealing with an insurance company over a bogus charge…

I appreciate any thoughts you may have but customer support at Dreamhost have been vague and seemingly ignored the real problem all along. Perhaps I should ask them something specific that you may know of?

Thank you for all of your assistance in this matter, I truly appreciate it.

Hosting companies can be such a pain sometimes. I figured as much it was a resource issue. Possibly the other sites you have with them are not on the same server and that’s why. If you are on shared hosting depending on how full one server is they may move you to another. You might want to let them know other sites on the server are not having issues and you would like to be moved to one of those.

Thank you Spencer. I setup a cache plugin yesterday along with some htaccess editing to leverage browser caching and want to check to see if that made any difference. If not, I will reach out to the web host and suggest we be moved to an alternate server as you have suggested. If you could leave this thread open I will reply and mark as resolved as soon as I have a working solution.

    Thanks!

Do you run the feed plugin on your site? Is it possible this is related to the problem I have come across? The hosting company has noted that moving to another shared server would present the same problem. My next test is to disable images from the Facebook feed and try to limit that feed to 2 posts instead of what we have now.

Not sure where else to go.

I hope you can figure out your site error swiftly!
