500 internal server error after moving hosts

The plug in worked perfectly on my old host but I moved to a new one and now get 500 errors. As far as I can tell the config is the same:
Old urls: https://sub.domain.com/page1
CNAME set up to direct requests for sub.domain.com to domain.com
Sub domain added to hosting account pointed at /home/www.domain.com
Simple 301 Redirects on domain.com :
https://sub.domain.com/page1 redirect to /page1
I think it’s something to do with the way the host handles the sub domain.
