500 Server Error After Upgrade To WordPress 4.0

Although, I got away with 500 errors earlier by disabling wp-supercache plugin. But the comments issue was there for newer posts, and older posts were working correctly. strange!

Hey guys @leanderbraunschweig fix works like a charm and quite easy to implement. However just to let you know that if you are running an older version of Thesis, DIY has released an update for complete WP 4.0 compatibility. Thesis 1.8.6

Does anyone know if this fix can be applied with a version of thesis prior to 1.8.5 ? Specifically 1.8.2 ?

I am wondering if I can simply apply this fix to the comments.php file without upgrading as I no longer have my Thesis subscription.

I guess I can just backup everything and give it a shot, but was wondering if anyone knew for sure.

Just wanted to post my follow up in case anyone else is in a similar situation. I had a blog running Thesis 1.8.2 experiencing these 500 errors after upgrade to WordPress 4.0

I was, in fact, able to make this fix to the comments.php file, without upgrading to Thesis 1.8.5 , it does work ok, and solved my issue.

I can confirm that for Thesis 1.8.2, the comments stopped working after upgrading to WP 4.0. @leanderbraunschweig’s directions are spot-on. The code that needs to be changed in v1.8.2 is in the same file, but line 176. Change from:

$wp_query->comments_by_type = &separate_comments($wp_query->comments);

Removing the “&” to this:

$wp_query->comments_by_type = separate_comments($wp_query->comments);

Works! Next step, definitely time to update to a new theme!
