I can’t save changes to my website when Wordfence is active. I get an error message with a 500 server error. I’ve uninstalled Wordfence and deleted the tables with the Wordfence Assistant plugin and then reinstalled Wordfence. Same problem. Please advise.

Hi @ncorum, thanks for your question and sorry to see you’re having trouble after installing/reinstalling Wordfence.

This at first glance looks like a case for Learning Mode, although this is usually turned on after a fresh installation. From the Wordfence Dashboard click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. This will help Wordfence learn that any actions during this time are normal and it will allow them in the future.

During this time, try to edit and save some changes as before.

Afterwards, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting.

If this approach doesn’t work, when inspecting the browser console, are there any red errors or failed script/page loads reported?

If so, you could try disabling all plugins except for Wordfence and try again. You could also try switching to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty during this time as themes can also cause script conflicts. If you’re able to save successfully with just Wordfence enabled, reactivate each of your other plugins until the error reoccurs, identifying the troublemaker.

If you want to use screenshots to illustrate any errors directly, please try Snipboard which will provide you with links to paste here for me.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Thanks, Peter. I did as you suggested. I tested it on a new page and I could save my changes with all the plugins activated as well as Wordfence. However, I can’t save my homepage changes. I did look at the console and see some red when I try to save that page. Here’s the screenshot:

Does this mean anything to you?

Hi @ncorum, because there are a couple of error 500s in there, it could be a similar issue that again needs to be allowed through with Learning Mode. If you try to specifically edit the homepage, there may be additional scripts that need to be allowed.

Did disabling plugins or your theme yield any positive results as they’re normally the source of additional script errors?

    Thanks again,

    Peter.
