• I was editing a post in Visual (not Text) and clicked abc. It threw a 501 error code. I just checked it to be sure I went through all the steps and it happened. The error is /wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/spellchecker/rpc.php not supported.

I never added a plugin to spell check so believe it is part of my theme. How do I, well, support it? ?? Is it my host, my computer settings?

  • The spellchecker is no longer part of a default WordPress install. I think it was removed in WordPress 3.5. Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

I’ve seen too many posts about errors after upgrading to 3.6 so wanted to wait for the next upgrade. One site runs bbPress and is active. The person who built it isn’t around and I was worried about issues.

So on this issue, my version of WP isn’t compatible with the theme?

In reality, 3.6 was a very smooth and easy update from a support pov. The only issues reported were specific to themes or plugins that were no longer compatible with the 3.6 – despite these developers having the best part of 4 months to test their plugins/themes.

WordPress 3.7 will build upon 3.6, so I suggest you upgrade now rather than later.

I’ve no idea why you are still seeing the spellchecker. I’m pretty sure it was removed in WP 3.5. Either way, now would be a good time to look for a spellchecker plugin as there will not be any
spell check functionality in core in the foreseeable future.

Ok. Will upgrade all but the big one. For that I will post for a freelancer as I’m not on enough to deal with bbPress or Members having PMS.

I definitely have the spellcheck and I just double-checked on a different blog.

You are using WordPress 3.5.2. Update to 3.6.1

If it was removed, my update forgot to remove it.

All but one updated. Found one site not “right” but am waiting for host to scan logs to see if it was a plugin, hack, or ? I think access logs are deleted after 24 hours and changes were on the 14th so we will see. (I don’t want to post logs I see from error logs or other details until host has a peek. You can help more if you know whether it was a hack, plugin or ?)

If was because I didn’t update I will post it here shamefully so you can give me “I told you so” gleefully.
