Chrome correctly processes <em>.

Also Chrome supports <i> just fine

Even if it didn’t, that would be a Chrome bug since soooooo many webpages use it ??

In Chrome anyway, <i> does not appear as italic.

It’s more likely that your theme resets default browser styles and then adds support for <em>, but not for <i>.
