a couple of pages running really slow after installing smush
-
hi,
i had a couple of pages come up slow after setting up smush. with the plugin deactivated the pages were back to normal. i switched it from loading javascript in the footer to header, that helped some, but they were still noticeably slower. i disabled lazy loading for the 2 pages and that fixed it. any idea on what might be happening?
thanks!

Hi @turbojae,
Without seeing the issue live, I’m afraid it’s tough to say what might be causing it. Since you have stated it loads fine once Lazyload is disabled, could we know whether there are any other lazyload settings enabled within other plugins or on the theme side?
Enabling the same features within different plugins or theme settings can cause a conflict; maybe it’s that?
If you can confirm there isn’t any other plugin or theme where lazyload is enabled, then a link to the page URL where you notice the issue would be helpful.
Smush also provides an option to enable “Native lazy load” under Smush > Lazylooad. Could you please check whether switching to “Native lazy load” makes any difference?
Please do let us know how that goes. Looking forward to your response.
Kind Regards,
Nithinhi,
this is the url that’s running slow before it was disabled for lazy loading (i’ve enabled lazy loading for it again so you can what i mean):

for comparision, it used to be as fast as this page (this was the other slow page too and i’ve disabled lazy loading on it too):
https://www.thx.com/thx-spatial-audio-for-pros/THX Spatial Audio for Professionals and Businesses
Real-time positional audio is needed for accurate immersive gaming and entertainment experiences. With the proliferation of next-generation audio standards like MPEG-H, and video formats including Ultra-High Definition (UHD) for broadcasting and video streaming, there is a growing need to deliver these experiences to consumers.
https://www.thx.comi’ve tried native lazy load enabled and disable but that didn’t make any noticeable difference and it’s currently enabled.
changing the javascript to be loaded in the header (instead of the footer) noticeably improved the speed, but it was still slow.
the only fix was to disable lazy loading for the page.
i don’t have any other plugins that do lazy load, at least i don’t think so.
thanks!
Hi @turbojae,
Thanks for sharing the URLs. Just to be clear, by slow you meant the content takes time to load once the page is loaded or the page is slow to load?
I wasn’t able to notice much difference when I check the load of the page, so making sure we are on the same page.
I could notice the content or sections do take time to load, if that’s what you meant, could we know the value set for “Display & Animation” for the Lazyload setting in Smush?
Do you notice any difference if the above option is set to “None”?
Looking forward to your response.
Kind Regards,
Nithinhi,
it’s the sections loading slow as you’ve mentioned.
i’ve only tried 2 display animation settings: the default (fade in: duration 400ms, 0 ms delay) and spinner (default image).
look at this page too, i’ve removed it from don’t lazyload list and i’ve set display animation to none. it’s more obvious that the sections don’t display right away.
https://www.thx.com/thx-spatial-audio-for-pros
after setting display animation to none, i don’t see any improvements.
what else can i try?
thanks,
jeremyhi,
i’m going to turn off lazy loads on the 2 pages today, so please let me know if you tried it and if you have any other recommendations.
thanks!
jeremyhi,
i updated the smush plugin and turned off lazy loading for the 2 pages that i’m having issues with:
thx.com/thx-spatial-audio-for-pros
thx.com/thx-spatial-audio-for-gamingif you have anything else i can try please let me know asap.
thanks,
jeremyHi @turbojae
Thank you for response and I’m sorry for keeping you waiting!
I’ve checked both these pages again and noticed two things that may be important here:
1. on both these pages there’s one big image that might be taking a while to get loaded. Lazy Load would be applied to them as they are “below the fold” and should actually help with overall speed but just for testing purpose:
could you try temporarily removing (or replacing with way smaller one) this image from “/thx-spatial-audio-for-pros” page?
https://www.thx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ocean_meets_music_TWO_LINES.jpg
Once it’s done, enable Lazy Load and clear all cache and see if it changes anything.
If it does, we’ll consult it with our developers to see why this is causing slow down instead of speeding up.
2. is the site configured to use “www” and “https://” prefixes in WordPress?
By this I mean settings of both WordPress Address and Site Address options on “Settings -> General” page. Also, how is the redirect from http to https set and from non-www to www version? Is it via some plugin (like e.g. Really Simple SSL or similar) or is it server-level rule?
I’m asking about this because at first I’ve accessed these pages using exact links that you shared (so no HTTPS, no www) and initial redirect was super-slow for me. Most likely it isn’t related but I’ve seen cases in the past where site was only redirected to HTTPS but not configured and that affected various features (such as Lazy Load) due to necessary redirects being slow.
Kind regards,
AdamHello @turbojae ,
We haven’t heard from you for several days now, so it looks like you don’t need our assistance anymore.
Feel free to re-open this ticket if needed.
Kind regards
Kasiahi,
sorry, i was dealing with some infrastructure issues, which is probably why you asked #2. it should be fast now.
back to #1. i’ve got lazy load running for https://www.thx.com/thx-spatial-audio-for-pros and the page is loading with delays/slow. which image do you want me to replace or remove?
thanks,

Hi @turbojae
Thanks for response!
The image I was referring to is this one
https://www.thx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ocean_meets_music_TWO_LINES.jpg
It’s a feature image for the “Ocean Meets Music Festival” post (so probably you’d need to make a change in this post).
Kind regards,
Adamhi,
looks like that image was not compressed. i compressed it and it went from about 2mb to 376kb. that alone sped the page up with lazy loading, but the page still loads slower overall with lazy loading than without.
i’ve left the page as is with lazy loading on, so you can view it. after you see it, please let me know and i’ll turn off lazy loading and you can see the difference.
thanks,
jeremyhi,
have you had a chance to look at it? i’m going to turn off lazy load tomorrow. i was hoping you could see how much slower that page is with lazy load and without.
thanks,
jeremyHi @turbojae
I can’t see the Lazy Load class on your images, could you please create a Staging site https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-staging/ and we can verify the Staging with Lazy Load and the Lazy Load disabled on live at the same time to check the difference between both situations.
Best Regards
Patrick Freitashi,
i haven’t turned off lazy loading yet. i wanted to be sure you guys can see it with and without.
i’ll turn it off now. please have a look
thanks,
jeremyhi,
sorry i misread your message. i’ve turned it back on now.
you can clearly see it’s affect on the home page too.
from https://www.thx.com/thx-spatial-audio-for-pros/
< i m g alt=”Ocean Meets Music Festival” data-src=”https://www.thx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ocean_meets_music_TWO_LINES.jpg” class=” lazyloaded” src=”https://www.thx.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ocean_meets_music_TWO_LINES.jpg” loading=”lazy” >
shows it running again.
please have a look asap, so i can turn it off.
sorry, our staging site is not for public consumption and i can’t give you access.
thanks,
