Thank you for providing this plugin. I’m new to multisite so I have a couple of basic questions:

    1. When doing a fresh install of WP and turning on multisite, which method makes it the easiest for end users to use domain mapping – subdomain-based mulitsite or subdirectory-based multisite? Does one put less requirements on the Cpanel side of the equation than the other?

    2. Forgive this question — but why do I need this plugin? Can’t this be done, including URL rewrites, all in the base site .htaccess file? Or is something else required to happen inside of WordPress that makes this plugin a requirement?

    3. I tried to read the TRAC entries about this function in core/version 4.4 but I got lost very quickly. As of now December 2015 is it still true that I could just wait (how long?) for WordPress version 4.4 and this functionality will be in the base product?

Please do not take my question as unappreciative – I am in awe of what you guys can do. I am just trying to keep my site as simple as possible, but get the job done.

  • I am also wondering if the mapping feature is now included in the 4.4 core ?

As I have to update manually the database each time I add a new domain as the plugin is not able anymore to add a new domain, it would be a really good news for me.

1a – There is no difference to the user from the WP dashboard but if you have subdomains your user can use the subdomain as a CNAME in their DNS.

1b – No differences in cPanel

2 – You can do domain mapping with web server rewrites if you want the site to reside on the original unmapped URL. (ie. you can rewrite the domain to the unmapped URL) The purpose of this plugin has been to allow the site to reside in the mapped domain.

Alternatively, if you wanted to edit the URLs of the sites in Network admin for your users then you do not need this plugin. (answers #3)

Thanks Ron – do you mind expanding on #3 a bit?

Are you saying that all I have to do is change the site URL in the settings for the user’s site from https://username.foonetwork.com to https://username.com (assuming they have the domain username.com registered and a domain pointer set in their hosting account to send it to https://username.foonetwork.com ?

Is that the idea or am I missing something? I can certainly manually edit the URLs of the sites for my users if this will work.

The first half is correct. When you edit the URL, the original username.foonetwork.com disappears so you can’t use it for a CNAME pointer.

(I think?) that is ok. Let me lay this out, please tell me if it makes sense:

    1. Edit the URL settings in the user’s site to state that the URL is https://username.com

    2. At the user’s registrar, set the DNS to where my multisite network is hosted. My multisite needs to be on a dedicated IP address.

    3. Make sure cookies are handled correctly.

    4. Random internet surfers can now put www.username.com into their browser and they will end up at the user’s site correctly, and all URLs will be re-written to domain base username.com

    5. (this one I am really not sure about) When user wants to log into their WP back-end at their site, they’d still use the link username.foonetwork.com/wp-login.php (?)

    1 & 2 – correct

3 – DM handles the cookies

4- If you edit the site URL there is no URL re-writing happening. As they add links the URLs will already be the mapped domain

5- the backend will run in the mapped domain

Thanks so much for your time, Ron; marking this question as resolved.
