• Can anyone recommend a good program that would allow me to create or modify themes? I’m looking for something that will allow me to do what I want to do without knowing any programming, working mostly with a visual interface. I have very brief exposure to programming and I know is something I want to stay away from. I have seen a few programs but it seems like a lot of them do not offer very many options.

I know that this can be done with Dreamweaver however I have not had a chance to learn Dreamweaver. I really don’t have the time to learn now and most of the YouTube tutorials I have seen seem to rely on hand coding instead of using the visual interface.

  • Self-hosted WP sites do take an investment of time and patience and you have to be willing to do some technical stuff, including working with basic code. There are a few themes that are mostly drag and drop, but they are not perfect and when you have trouble, you have to deal with the code side of it. And setting WP up involves some technical work — it’s not hard, but it can be confusing and frustrating at times.

If you don’t want to do any “technical” stuff at all, a self-hosted WP site is probably not the best way for you to go. Perhaps consider and check out using WordPress.COM — as they take care of all the back-end stuff and the user interface is much more idiot-proof. You won’t have as much flexibility and it’s limited in what you can do with your site. And for more than very basic stuff, you have to pay for upgrades. But it might be worth checking out.

BTW, Dreamweaver cannot create a WP theme unless you know how to create the theme. That would be like saying Word can write a paper for you.

    Thank you for the reply.

Most of what you said in your reply was what I was afraid of.
Thank you for the information about WordPress.com. I will definitely have to take a look at that.

    Thanks again.

Another option would be to pay someone to set up the site for you and/or take care of any technical-side issues if you run into troubles. If you want to explore that possibility, you can post a job on this page:

I would like to do as much of it myself as I possibly could but I might have to take a look at that having someone help me with it.

When I asked earlier about creating a theme in Dreamweaver with what you see is what you get. I don’t think I was extremely clear. I understand the software cannot create the theme for you. When I was really trying to get at was. Is it possible to create a WordPress theme using entirely wysiwyg.

I definitely did not phrase that correctly. Obviously I know software cannot create something without being manipulated.

LOL – I didn’t really take that literally or mean to sound flip — actually because of the way WP works, getting Dreamweaver set up to work with it on local install or synced to a live site is fairly involved and tricky. Certainly not an easy way to do it. And Dreamweaver definitely has a learning curve too.

I think you mean creating a WP site — which is not the same as creating a theme — creating a theme means putting together all the code from scratch! So definitely not what you want to do.

WordPress.COM sites are the closest thing to WYSIWYG — at least so far as I know. You can very easily sign-up for a free site with them, set it to not be visible to anyone else — and then start playing around with it and see what you think. There will still be a learning curve to figure out how to use it, but there are lots of good tutorials on the site and on the web, including YouTube videos.

    Thanks again for your help.

Now I have two more questions for you.

    1. I’ve actually fairly computer savvy so learning a program and dealing with tricky situations would not bother me a whole lot as long as I am able to avoid hand coding. Even if it would be tricky would it be possible to use WordPress along with the visual aspect of Dreamweaver?

The reason I am so insisted on trying to get something done with a visual editor is because it is very difficult for me to type. In fact, I use speech recognition to do 99.9% of my typing. So as long as it’s tricky and not impossible I would definitely be game for giving it a try.

    2. Have you heard about this?

It seems to be a visual editor for WordPress. It may not be the greatest thing but it might be worth a try.
Thank you again for all of your help I really appreciate it
